Walter P. “Scotty” Scott, Jr., of Fallon, former resident of Reno, passed away on Feb. 21, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno. He was born to Walter and Eleanor Scott on Sept. 18, 1940 in Philadelphia, PA. His family moved to Reno in 1955. He graduated from Reno High School in 1959 and the University of Nevada-Reno in 1969. Scotty moved to Fallon in 1983. He was the grandson of the late “Death Valley Scotty”.
Scotty was an Eagle Scout, member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. Scotty was also in the AA program for 28 years. He was a retired accountant who served as the Churchill County Comptroller from 1983-1992. He retired with the rank of Sergeant Major from the United States Marine Corps. Scotty was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He was an avid team roper belonging to the American Cowboy Team Ropers Association, Construction Industry Cowboys Association, and Senior Pro Rodeo. In his younger years, he enjoyed riding bulls. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Scotty is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 38 years, Ruth Scott; sister, Kathleen Madigan; brother, Daniel Scott; five children, Walter Scott, Carol Scott Self, Michelle Scott, Lisa Burton, all of Reno and Robert Cutler (Bethany) of Eureka, Nev.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nephews, Patrick and Sean Madigan of Reno.
Scotty was known for his great smile and sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held Thursday evening at 6 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Smith Family Funeral Home, 505 Rio Vista Dr., Fallon, (775) 423-2255. Funeral mass will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. A luncheon will follow the mass at Moiola Hall at the church. Interment will follow the luncheon at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Fernley at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made in his memory to the American Lung Association.
