The defense was suffocating and the offense efficient as the Fallon boys basketball team came up with its first win of the season.

Juniors Derrick Stanford and Miles Adams led the Greenwave with 11 points each as Fallon ran past Fernley 54-36 on Tuesday.

The new-look Wave forced 33 turnovers to help jump start the offense and control the tempo of the game.

“They played really hard and aggressive,” Fallon head coach T.W. Cunningham said. “There was plenty of turnovers, but we just need to keep practicing and play hard.”

Fallon came out strong in the first quarter, forcing three turnovers to jump out to an early 8-0 lead. Fernley sophomore Cade Knutson hit a jump shot to cut the lead to 10-7, but the Wave responded with a 3-pointer from Adams and a bucket from freshman Dylan Tedford for a 15-9 lead.

Early season jitters showed for the Wave in the second quarter as Fernley forced numerous turnovers to prevent Fallon from running away with the game.

Stanford hit a layup off a Vaqueros turnover to put the Wave up 10, and back-to-back scores from senior Tyler Hubbard and Adams gave the Fallon lead at 30-18.

Stanford was all over the court grabbing rebounds, loose balls and scoring to ignite Fallon.

“If one thing isn't working I move on to the next,” Stanford said. “I think me and Jake Johnston are the leaders and bring energy. I think the other guys feed off it.”

Fernley, on the other hand, had little answer for Fallon's athleticism, but Knuston wouldn't be silenced. Draped all game by Fallon senior Jake Johnston, Knutson scored a game-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers.

The Vaqueros were held to eight points in the third quarter, six coming off 3s by Knutson, as the Wave extended its lead to 46-27.

Stanford added five points and an assist in the quarter to put the game out of reach.

“He did a great job with offensive rebounds,” Cunningham said. “Every hustle play Derrick was around and kept the ball alive.”

Cunningham was pleased with the effort and aggressiveness of his players, though, he knows there are some kinks to work out before league play starts.

With nine Greenwave players scoring, Cunningham said it will be harder for teams to prepare because they can't focus on shutting one player down.

Though Fernley dropped its first game of the season, head coach Dave Burns said he was pleased with the effort from his players. Burns said the Vaqueros will have to find a complement to Knutson on offense and will have to commit fewer turnovers as the season progresses.

“The kids went out there and played for 32 minutes and didn't have any let down,” Burns said.
