Lady Wave sprints past Dayton

It took the Fallon girls basketball team a quarter to settle down and shaky a pesky Dayton team on Tuesday. When the Lady Wave did find their groove, they ran away from Dayton with a 57-36 season-opening win.

Leading the charge for Fallon was senior forward Sara Parsons, who scored 26 points and grabbed five rebounds. Junior center Lena Wolf added 10 points and senior Kenya Brown chipped in with five points, five rebounds and three steals in the victory.

“I was very pleased with the way they played,” Fallon head coach Chele Dalager said. “All the way from our young kids off the bench to our veteran seniors.”

Brown is a new position this season, moving from the post to the wing and it's taking Dalager a little time to adjust to the new lineup.

Throughout the game, Dalager was mixing and matching personnel on the court to find the best mix of players. However, Dalager said she wants more movement from the offense and finding cohesion as a team.

“Movement in our offense was one of our big issues,” Dalager said. “Making sure we're all on the same age because it's early on. Finding the rotation, finding a group of kids who are going to work together.”

The Lady Wave traded blows with the Dust Devils in the first quarter in a frantic pace. But Fallon pulled away in the second quarter as the defense allowed four points and the Lady Wave went up 34-20 at the half.

It was more of the same from Fallon in the third and fourth quarters, as their pressure defense allowed 16 points in the second half.

The offense slowed down a bit in comparison to the first half, scoring 23 points, but eight Lady Wave players scored in the game.

“In the second quarter I think they ran out of gas,” Dalager said.

Dalager said a big plus from the blowout win was getting her younger players some much needed playing time. Up 14 points and heading into the second half, Dalager was able to utilize her bench and sub in the players with little or no varsity experience.

Though the players may not become stars overnight, Dalager said it gives them a taste of what the varsity level is about. The girls have a concept of game-time speed and athleticism at the varsity level and come league play, will be key for the Lady Wave to make a playoff run.

“I think they expect to win,” Dalager said. “They know we should be in the top four in the league, and I don't think they'll settle for anything less.”
