The Northern Nevada Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, one of more than 125 affiliates nationwide and internationally dedicated to the promise of a world without breast cancer, announces the availability of breast cancer program grant funds for 2010-2011.
Eligible organizations include nonprofit healthcare providers, governmental agencies and educational institutions offering community-based breast health education and breast cancer screening and/or treatment projects for the medically underserved.
The Northern Nevada Komen Affiliate is offering the opportunity for all potential grantees to polish their grant-writing skills and learn more about the Komen grants process at a free workshop, 9-11 a.m., on Tuesday at Saint Mary's Foundation, 520 W. 6th St., Reno (second-floor boardroom). Light refreshments will be served.
A downloadable grant application is available at www.komennorthnv.org. Komen grant applications for 2010-2011 must be received by Jan. 14, 2010, for funding beginning April 1, 2010, through March 31, 2011. Organizations in the Nevada counties of Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, Pershing, Storey and Washoe, and eastern portions of California counties of El Dorado, Nevada and Placer are eligible to apply for funding and attend the workshop.
“We recently completed a community profile, a comprehensive survey of our region's breast cancer rates and services, and we've found significant gaps in access to care among minorities, as well as higher than expected rates of breast cancer among women under 40,” said Lucy McGuire, Komen Northern Nevada Affiliate president. “We're anticipating funding grant requests to help address these critical needs,” she added.
The Northern Nevada Affiliate has granted more than $2 million to the local community since 1999. Remaining net income (a minimum of 25 percent) supports the Komen Award and Research Grant Program which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific programs around the world.
