A Winnemucca woman who was a passenger in a Ford crew cab pickup was killed Friday in a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 80. She has been identified as Susan Carol Sakurada, 52.
The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified the name of a passenger who was killed Friday afternoon in a multi-vehicle accident on westbound Interstate 80 midway between Fernley and the Trinity-U.S. Highway junction.
NHP Spokesman Trooper Chuck Allen said the woman, 52-year-old Susan Carol Sakurada of Winnemucca, was a passenger in a 1992 Ford F-350 crew cab pickup driven by her husband, Donn Lee Sakurada. Allen said their pickup had been pulling a small enclosed trailer when they struck an 18-wheeled truck-trailer rig that was already stopped for a separate crash.
The accident involved nine vehicles and injured seven. Troopers from the NHP's Major Accident Investigation Team are continuing to determine the chain of events.
Allen said at the time of the accident, strong winds and blowing dust and dirt produced very low to zero visibility conditions on that portion of Interstate 80. After the pickup struck the rear of the big rig, another approaching 18-wheeler driven by Slawominr Lojek of Chicago, Ill., rammed into the pickup.
Allen said Lojek was one of several motorists who had to be extricated by fire department personnel from both Churchill and Pershing counties.
Lojeck and Lee Sakurada, along with five other involved motorists, were all transported by ground ambulances to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. Allen said troopers are still interviewing the drivers and passengers and other witnesses in an effort to determine the chronological chain of events. The accidents involved four big rigs, four pickups and one Ford SUV.
“We believe there may be as many as four separate crashes that took place in a very short time frame,” Allen said.
Anyone with additional information should contact Trooper Kris Satterwhite at (775) 689-4682 or the Department of Public Safety-Communications Center at (775) 687-0400 regarding case # NHP-0911200662.
