Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol are still on the scene of a fatal multiple-vehicle fatality crash that took place on westbound Interstate 80 at about 12:18 p.m. Friday afternoon near mile marker 70, approximately 22 miles east of Fernley.
Trooper Chuck Allen said one woman was killed, four critically injured and two seriously injured. The NHP spokesman said the accident involved four semi-trailer or big rig trucks, four pick-ups and an SUV.
Due to the extreme windy conditions and the unsafe flying conditions for Care Flight, Allen said all six were transported by ground ambulances to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. At least three of the seriously injured had to be extricated by Fallon/Churchill firemen at the scene.
The Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) was also called to the scene and is still piecing together the chain of events that involved nine vehicles and 12 motorists. Allen said close-to-zero visibility due to strong winds that produced blowing dust and dirt was most likely the leading contributing factor in the chain of events.
Sgt Tom Lawson, head of the reconstruction team, said this event may consist of three or possibly four separate collisions that took place in a very short amount of time. His team is still interviewing the involved and other witnesses at the scene.
In the meantime, Allen said if anyone has additional information concerning this event, call Trooper Kris Satterwhite at (775) 689-4682 or the Department of Public Safety-Communications Center at (775) 687-0400 regarding case # NHP-0911200662.
One west bound lane is open and the other lane is expected to be cleared sometime Friday night.
