RENO — The Fallon Greenwave Bandits football team had no problems moving the ball down the field.
But when it mattered most, Fallon couldn't score in multiple trips in the red zone as Fernley won for the second time over Fallon, a 19-0 shutout in the Sierra Youth Football League Bandits championship game Saturday morning at McQueen High School.
“I'm very proud of this team,” Fallon coach Ed Little said. “They worked really hard in practice — in the rain and in the cold. Give credit to Fernley. They were fast on defense.”
The Greenwave (9-2), which lost to Fernley 24-14 in the regular season, was already down 12-0 before it got the ball for the first time. Fernley recovered two onside kicks, scoring touchdowns on both, and then relied on its red-zone defense to stop Fallon.
“We fumbled a lot on offense,” Little said.
With 5 minutes, 50 seconds left in the second quarter, Fallon tried to run a reverse before fumbling the ball on Fernley's 15-yard line. On the next series, Fallon had three tries within 5 yards from the end zone before falling short. Richardson dropped back for a pass on fourth down on the Fernley 2 but was sacked with less than 40 seconds left in the half.
Fallon's four series in the second half resulted in fumbles or turnovers on downs. Fallon fumbled on the first play of the half to set up Fernley's only second-half score. A 38-yard quarterback keeper to the right side on third and 22 put Fernley 2 yards shy on the end zone, where the Vaqueros scored on the next play.
Richardson's 23-yard run put Fallon near the red zone again on the next drive. A keeper and McCormick's two runs were too short for Fallon as it turned the ball over on downs with two minutes left in the third quarter.
Once Fallon was in the red zone again, this time in the fourth quarter, the Greenwave fumbled on a pitch on third goal from the 7.
Fallon ended the game with a turnover on downs during the final series.
