RENO — The Fallon defense put its stamp on the Sierra Youth Football League Freshman championship game on Saturday at McQueen High School.
The Greenwave defense allowed one touchdown as Fallon handed Damonte Ranch its first loss in three years with a 13-6 victory. Safety Cody Hernandez provided a pair of touchdown-saving tackles and an interception to help preserve the win.
The win capped a perfect season for the Wave at 11-0. The Mustangs finished 10-1.
“We stuck to our game plan,” Fallon head coach Matt Hyde said.
Fallon struck first as D.J. Hagler raced 41 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown as the Wave went up 6-0. However, Damonte Ranch countered in the second with a score of its own to tie the game.
Midway through the second quarter with Fallon at the Mustangs' 34-yard line, Hagler ran 29 yards for the decisive score.
Damonte Ranch, though, returned the kickoff to the Greenwave 48. The Mustangs drove the ball to Fallon's 37 with little time remaining in the half.
The Mustangs then broke loose, but Hernandez tripped up the Damonte Ranch running back at the 5-yard line to prevent the score.
“It could have all gone away if they scored those touchdowns,” Hernandez said.
In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs drove down to Greenwave 29, but Fallon forced a fumble and T.J. Mauga recovered for the Greenwave to seal the win.
