NARFE has monthly meeting on Oct. 21

National Association of Retired Federal Employees meets at the Churchill County Senior Center Oct. 21 at 12:30 p.m.

All retired and active civilian personnel are welcome.

Fallon, Fernley thrift stores have weekly sale

Fallon Industries Thrift Store at 165 Maine Street and Fernley Industries at 1301 Financial Way in Fernley are asking both communities for donations of furniture, knick-knacks and other unique items.  Donations are accepted in Fallon at 1520 S. Maine St., and in Fernley at 1301 Financial Way.  Call 423-4760 to schedule a donation pickup for either location. 

Specials for Nov. 16-21 are as follows:  Red tagged clothing items will be 50 percent off.  New tagged clothing, as well as, suits will be 35 percent off.  Sheets and pillow cases will be 25 percent off.  Picture frames and wall hangings will be 25 percent off. Nov. 21 will be a $5 clothing bag sale, which will include all red tagged clothing items.        

Housing Authority

schedules Nov. 18 visit

A representative from Nevada Rural Housing Authority Section 8 Program will be at Churchill County Social Services, 485 W. B Street, on Nov. 18 from 1-2 p.m. to take initial applications for the program. The representative will also be at the Fernley Senior Center, 1170 Newlands Dr., from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

The NRHA provides rental assistance to low-income families, the elderly and disabled persons.

Churchill County Museum hours change Monday

Open hours for the Churchill County Museum will be changing to accommodate construction schedule.

From Nov. 16 to Dec. 1, weekday and Saturday hours will be shortened to 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday hours will be from noon-4 p.m.

The November/December book sale is in progress with 10 percent off nearly everything in the store. Churchill County Museum Association members receive a 20 percent discount. Call 423-3677 for information.

Eagles breakfast on

Nov. 15 to help DARE

The Fallon Eagles are teaming up with the Churchill County Sheriffs Office to raise money for DARE. This is the 20th anniversary of the DARE program, and the Eagles want to raise money for this event.

The Eagles are having an all-you-can-eat breakfast on Nov. 15 from from 7:30-10:30 a.m. at their hall at 7977 Reno Highway.

Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children.

American Legion has spaghetti dinner

Sons of The American Legion, 90 N. Ada St., spaghetti dinner is Nov. 18 from 5-7 p.m. Cost is $6 per plate and includes salad, bread, and spaghetti.

Book fair ends Nov. 16

E.C Best Elementary library will host a fall book fair Nov. 16, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Proficiency testing takes place Nov. 16-20

Testing will take place at the Adult Education Center at 255 E. Stillwater Ave., east building. Each day during that week, the first test begins at 8:30 a.m. and the last test of the day will be given by 2 p.m.

Advanced arrangements need to be made for special testing times.

The math and reading proficiency tests will be given Monday-Friday of that week but the writing proficiency will only be given on Wednesday, Nov. 18. There is still time for students to get some extra proficiency study materials or to study with math teacher Gary Butori.

Churchill County Social Services has a new employment program called STEP.

STEP provides job training and employment search skills to help you obtain employment. A personal case plan will be set up for you, and an employment specialist will help you identify and remove your barriers to finding employment.

Social Services is also working with local employers to find out who is hiring and the skills they are seeking. To qualify for the program, you must be a resident of Churchill County, at least 18 years of age and make below 200 percent of the poverty guideline.

Take the next step and come to the Social Services office to pick up an application. Social Services is located at 485 West B St. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Democrats meet Nov. 18

The Churchill County Democrats will have their regular monthly meeting on Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. at Jerry's Restaurant.

‘The Store' announces Saturdays as Military Days

Stuf ‘N Such, “The Store,” announces Saturdays will be “Military Day” by offering to all military personnel and their families (with ID) a day of half-off pricing on all wearing apparel.

Thursdays remain a day of half -off pricing for seniors. Holiday merchandise is being put out daily with great deals. The Store is open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 99 S. Nevada St.

All proceeds go to benefit the Banner Churchill Community Hospital and The Store is staffed by volunteers from the Hospital Auxiliary.

Food pantry has 3-year anniversary on Nov. 15

The Out of Egypt Food Pantry has a three-year anniversary on Nov. 15 at 3 p.m., at the Church of the Nazarene, 1520 Grimes St.

Senior Pro Rodeo meets

Fallon Senior Pro Rodeo has its final meeting of 2009 on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Elks Lodge.

Fernley Republican women meet Tuesday

The Fernley Republican Women meet on the third Tuesday of each month in the conference room at Fernley Fun Center, 480 W. Main St. at 6:30 p.m. Visitors are welcome.

FRA Branch meets one week early on Nov. 19

Branch 192 of the FRA will have its monthly meeting at the American Legion hall, 90 N. Ada St.. on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.

The branch membership invites all (Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard) active duty, retirees and veterans of the Military Sea Services to attend any meeting.

An amendment to the National FRA Constitution has opened membership to all honorably discharged veterans of the sea services to join the FRA.

This meeting we will discuss this months events and the Christmas dinner. The meeting date has been moved because of Thanksgiving Day.

Wrestlers have sign-ups

The Greenwave youth wrestling program has sign-ups for the 2009-2010 wrestling season on Nov. 17-18 at the Numa Elementary Cafeteria from 5:30-7 p.m.

If you are a new member, bring a copy of your birth certificate.
