Lyon County Sheriff Allen Veil and Sgt. Bryan Parsons shop with their designated children during the 2008 Shop with a Sheriff for Christmas event at the Fernley Wal-Mart. A fundraiser is underway to support this year's upcoming shopping event for children from the community.
Last year's Shop with a Sheriff for Christmas program was so successful Lyon County Deputy Sheriff Julie Redmond is happy to be heading it up again this year.
Redmond indicated after the first year, he hoped to get the fundraising started earlier in 2009. This she did by sending flyers out the first part of November. Businesses and community members are being sought to support the project.
The goal is to raise at least $1,000 or more. That provides the opportunity for ten children to shop. Anything above that amount will increase the number of recipients able to shop. According to information supplied by Redmond, 100 percent of the funds will go toward the children.
Redmond reported receiving $3,000 in a short period of time for the 2008 program. That allowed 30 children to shop, and they were accompanied by Lyon County Deputy Sheriff officers.
“The first year's project was a huge success,”Redmond said. “I would also like to thank the Fernley Wal-Mart for hosting our event last year. They also provided a free cake and supplies to wrap the gifts.”
The Fernley Wal-Mart will again be hosting this year's Shop with a Sheriff for Christmas event.
“We are solely relying on the community and business donations to help make this event a huge success. We all realize this year will be especially tough due to the economy,” Deputy Redmond said.
Although businesses and community service organizations may donate larger sums or sponsor a child for $100, the group welcomes even $1, $5, $10 or any other amount from individuals as well.
Redmond is looking for suggestions or ways to increase contributions. Anyone with an idea is invited to call her. She is considering a “Tip-a-Sheriff” event and is seeking local restaurants that can offer this opportunity.
Individuals in all Lyon County communities including Dayton, Silver Springs, Stagecoach, Fernley, Yerington, Smith Valley and Mason Valley are expected to participate both in the fundraising and shopping event.
Donations are needed by Dec. 5. The shopping spree will take place in December at the Fernley Wal-Mart.
Redmond says it is a good way, not only to provide presents for children whose families are unable to do so this year, but also to reach out and help build trust for law enforcement with the kids.
The program was so popular last year that Redmond says, “I will make sure this event happens every Christmas. The sheriff and his command staff, several lieutenants and sergeants, my fellow co-workers and our VIP staff are very involved in making this a success this year and the following years to come.”
Anyone with ideas of ways to get funding or wanting to donate to the event, sponsor a child for $100 or get more information can contact Redmond by calling (775) 246-6200 or (775) 577-5023 or e-mailing jredmond@lyon-county.org.
Checks can be made out to “The Lyon County Sheriff's Office” with “Shop with a Sheriff” in the memo line and mailed to Attn: Brenda Farler, 30 Nevin Way, Yerington, NV 89447.
