Daisy Pete Smith, 76 years old, passed away in Reno, Nev. on Oct. 29, 2009 after a long illness. She was born to Ida Sooner George who was married to Young Pete of southern Nevada. Together they had 10 children. Daisy attended and graduated from Carson City Stewart Indian School. She played in the Stewart Indian Band. As a student, she was chosen as an attendant for the Miss Stewart Indian School Queen in the early 40's.
In her younger years she worked on ranches in the Elko area, as a cowgirl and a cook for the ranch hands. She loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, gardening and crocheting. In Reno she was a domestic helper for governor, Jim Gibbons and other prominent families in the medical and mining fields. In later years, she was active in helping the Western Shoshone people to achieve passage of a public law through the U.S. Congress that would benefit the tribe. She also helped people, young and old, who desired her assistance privately and publicly with historical information and spirituality relating to the Western Shoshones of Nevada. Her interest included special projects for the government needing to preserve ancestral artifacts in southern Nevada. She was very proud to be one of the few surviving descendants of Chief Kawich of the Kawich Mountain range in central Nevada.
Daisy was married to Burton Smith from Big Smokey Valley, Nevada for 58 years. They had one son, Adrian, of Bishop, Calif. and one grandson, Josh.
Daisy is survived by her husband, Burton of Reno; son, Adrian; grandson, Josh of Bishop, Calif.; brother, Jim Pete of Fallon; sister, Mabel Pete Martin of Phoenix, Ariz.; numerous nieces and nephews in Cache, Okla. and Nevada.
