Protect Yourself With Wilderness Emergency Skills

Whether trekking the Sierra, hunting in the Ruby Mountains or river rafting on the Truckee, those planning to spend time in remote areas or the backcountry need to be prepared for medical emergencies when help is delayed.

WNC Fallon and Carson City will each offer a hands-on, two-day course that will cover a wide range of wilderness first aid topics. The non-credit course, Wilderness First Aid, CMSV 143C will meet Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7-8, in Fallon and Nov. 14-15 in Carson, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Cost: $95. No first aid or medical experience is required to take the course.

Wilderness First Aid is a comprehensive course on how to react, respond and save a life in remote life-threatening situations. The 18-hour class, designed for trip leaders, camp counselors and outdoor enthusiasts, is pre-approved and meets requirements for the Boy Scouts of America, American Camping Association and the United States Forest Service. Students will earn a two-year American Health and Safety certification.

Though this course is great for the wilderness it also has value when traveling to parts of the world with very poor emergency medical services. The emergency response training includes patient assessment, attending to musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries, splinting, and a variety of other topics. Lecture and discussion, practical exercise and outdoor scenarios help students gain confidence, and encourage the development of critical decision making skills.
