Tea Party Express chugs into Fallon

The Tea Party Express II: Countdown to Judgment Day steamrolled into Fallon on Tuesday and was greeted by a jubilant crowd ready to take on big government.

About 400 people came out to talk, listen and sing about how the Tea Party plans to change the culture in Congress and the White House. The rally was the seventh stop in a 38-city tour during the next two weeks culminating in Orlando, Fla.

The Fallon rally — organized by Leslie Beach a 20-year Fallon resident — was treated to numerous national leaders including conservative radio talk-show host Mark Williams, co-chairman of the Tea Party Express; Deborah Johns, vice chairwoman of the Our Country Deserves Better political action committee; and singers Llyod Marcus and Diana Nagy.

Braving the cold and wind, protesters spoke of electing new leadership in Nevada starting with Democratic Sen. Harry Reid.

“We're a traveling 4th of July show,” Williams said. “We're encouraging folks to get active and we've been inactive to long.”

According to some Tea Party members, the movement isn't about liberal versus conservative; instead, it's about a nonpartisan movement to stop government spending and interference in the daily lives of Americans.

Beach joined the Tea Party when President Barack Obama was inaugurated on Jan. 20. Beach has owned and operated Beach Mortgage Inc., for the past 11 years and is angry with how the federal government bailed out banks.

Beach said she has a problem with big businesses receiving tax breaks and doesn't want the government telling her how to operate her business.

“My taxes are going in to pay the big banks, to buy little banks who will no longer work with me,” Beach said. “So, I'm paying them to put me out of business.”

Another hot-button issue for the Tea Party is health care and the proposal for a government option. Beach and her fellows party members are against a government-run health care option.

“I believe we can do our own health care,” Beach said. “Less government is better government.”

Protesters also spoke about the lack of support they feel the federal government has given to individuals who serve in the armed forces. Johns was critical of first lady Michelle Obama, saying they didn't want her to support military families.

“I do not want a first lady, who has never been proud of her country, to all of a sudden tell me she's going to make military families her special project,” Johns said. “She has no idea of what families go through.”
