Local magician raises money for breast cancer awareness

Teenage magician Sean Paranuk will present a special Halloween show — An Evening of Magic with Sean — at 7 p.m. Friday at the Churchill County High School theatre for $4 per person.

Proceeds will go to Relay for Life team Kids for a Cause who are raising funds to fight breast cancer, which is a personal mission for Paranuk and his family.

“My mom — she was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was about seven,” Paranuk said. “She's still fighting.”

Paranuk, 16, discovered magic ten years ago when he saw a performer on television and afterwards his father showed him a trick.

“I realized anyone can do it,” Paranuk said. “I just like the mystery of it I guess. (and) How you can see something impossible happen right in front of your eyes.”

Since then, Paranuk has perfected his craft, and has pursued guidance from professionals such as Criss Angel, Jeff McBride, Mac King, Neil Patrick Harris, Lance Burton and Eugene Burger.

“I've learned a lot from each magician I've ever met, professional or armature,” Paranuk said. “Probably the number one thing I learned is that it's not really about the trick. It's about how the audience perceives the trick and perceives you as a performer.”

Paranuk does private parties, but he also dedicates much of his talent toward fundraising, like Relay for Life.

Paranuk's mother, Theresa, was diagnosed in 2001, and since then she has been amazed to see her family join together in support. Her daughter, Erin, 13, started her own Relay for Life team Kids for a Cause.

Paranuk then began performing for Relay for Life events and to raise funds for Erin's team. Theresa's husband, Scott, also offers disc jockey services for Relay for Life events.

“I think it's really great. They do all of this stuff together,” Theresa said. “They work really hard. It's pretty amazing to watch all of them.”

Paranuk wants to help his family and others, and he is using the power of magic to do it.

“I'm doing special affects, but live,” Paranuk said. “There are a couple of pieces that are more jumpy moments, but it's not going to be too bizarre. It's something that I've always done, but it's just more of a challenge to myself to present it in a Halloween mood.”

Theresa said attendants will be impressed.

“People come and enjoy it from adults to little kids,” Theresa said. “It's amazing to watch. It's amazing for us as parents to watch how much he's grown.”

Paranuk said he hopes many attend because they will help Theresa and others suffering from breast cancer just by enjoying some Halloween magic.

“We're trying to find ways to help people like her,” Paranuk said.
