Zarzyski and Gustafson appear at Eureka Opera House

The Eureka Opera House presents “Paul Zarzyski and Wylie Gustafson” on Friday, Nov.13, at 7 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at the door. Adults are $7, seniors $5 and children 15 and under accompanied by an adult are admitted free.

Paul Zarzyski, recipient of the 2005 Montana Governor's Arts Award for Literature, has been spurring the words wild across the open range of the page and calling it poetry for over 35 years, a dozen or so during which he complemented the writing with bareback bronc riding on the rodeo circuit.

He has been a featured performer at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the National Storytelling Festival, the National Folk Festival, and has recited at the Library of Congress, and Festival Hall in London, as well as on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion.

Since receiving an M.F.A. degree in creative writing from the University of Montana in 1976, Paul has authored 10 collections and has recorded four spoken- word CD's, his most recent publication, from Oreana Books, titled “Wolf Tracks on the Welcome Mat,” received the 2004 Spur Award from The Western Writers of America.

Wylie Gustafson is a full-time rancher as well as being one of America's most popular traditional entertainers. Wylie gets up every day and tends to the livestock. It grounds him and is the backbone of his art.

The secret of Wylie's honest, soulful music isn't in any musical formulas or flashy gimmicks. Its purity lies in his character — earnest and hardworking, beaming with friendly vigor and a smile as warm as first light rising over the prairie.

Wylie and his band, The Wild West have just released their 14th album with 13 new songs from the untamed west. Hang – n – Rattle! Joyously offers the jump-and-kick of the bands more rollicking sounds. Wylie partnered with Paul Zarzyski on seven co-writes for the album.

The daring duo has thrown the gate open to new arenas of contemporary western songwriting.

Most recently Wylie Gustafson and Paul Zarzyski have performed together at the Kennedy Center.

For information, call the Eureka Opera House from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday at (775) 237-6006.
