Poetry contest deadline Oct. 25
A $1,000 grand prize is offered in a Free Poetry Contest, sponsored by Christian Fine Arts Society.
Everyone is welcome to enter and compete for 25 prizes totaling $5,000. To enter, send one poem of 21 lines or less to Free Poetry Contest, 7308 Heritage Dr., Mt. Vernon, IN 47620. Poems may be written on any subject, using any style. Deadline for entering is Oct.25.
Poets may also enter online at www.free contest.com. A winners list will be sent to all entrants.

The Churchill Animal Protection Society (CAPS) located at 5894 Pasture Road will be closed on Oct. 17 due to lack of staffing.
The Community Health Nurse seasonal flu clinic is Oct. 15
The Community Health Nurse is having a seasonal flu clinic on Oct. 15.
Appointments will be made for persons 18 years and older. The cost of the flu shot is $20. Medicare, Medicaid, and Senior Dimensions will be accepted and the card issued for these programs must be presented at the time of the appointment. We
The nurse is unable to accept private insurance and cannot give flu shots for free.

Social Services has new hours
Churchill County Social Services will have new hours beginning Oct. 1.
Office hours will be 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Social Services will be open during the lunch hour.
Annual harvest auction is Oct. 18
An annual harvest is slated for Oct. 18 at the Smith Valley Community Hall in Wellington. Doors open at 10 a.m., and the auction begins at 11:30 a.m.
Among the items are a craft boutique, country kitchen, snack bar, silent auction and raffle.

Sons of the American Legion spaghetti dinner is Oct. 21
The Sons of The American Legion, 90 N. Ada St., is having a spaghetti dinner with salad and bread on Oct. 21. Dinner will be served 5-7 p.m.

Community Service Thrift Shop half price sale is Oct. 16
Community Service Thrift Shop, 169 E. Center St. has special sales each weekday.
The store will have a half-price sale on Oct. 16. The CCST is continuing to receive many requests for assistance from people who have no place else to get assistance with housing, utilities or prescriptions on a one time basis.
The CCST is nonprofit and staffed by more than 25 volunteers who have chosen to “give back” to the community by donating their time and skills.
Leave clean, resalable donations between 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekdays.
The store is open from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays.
Fallon, FernleyIndustries offer weekly specials through Oct. 17
Fallon Industries Thrift Store at 165 Maine St., and Fernley Industries, the newest thrift store at 1301 Financial Way in Fernley, are asking both communities for donations of furniture, knick-knacks and other unique items.
Donations are accepted and greatly appreciated in Fallon at 1520 S. Maine St., and in Fernley at 1301 Financial Way. Call 423-4760 to schedule a donation pickup for either location.
Specials for Oct. 12-17 are as follows: Yellow tagged clothing items are 50 percent off. Purses and shoes are 35 percent off.Electronics and Halloween items are 25 percent off. With the cold weather fast approaching, winter coats are on sale. The $5 clothing bag sale is Oct. 17.
All proceeds help provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities and families in need of household items. Gift cards are for sale at both locations.
Haunted house and hay ride are offered on Oct. 23-24
It's not just the fall weather that will bring chills down your spine. Churchill County Parks and Recreation will be putting together its annual Haunted House and Hay Ride on Oct. 23-24 from 6-10 p.m. each night.
This year's house and newly designed hayride will be sure to scare even the toughest person around.
Be sure to come out and get into the Halloween spirit.

Co-op is looking for artists, crafts people for annual fair
Sagebrush Sisters Artist Co-op in Fallon is looking for artists and fine crafts people for its second annual Christmas Art Faire at the Historic Old Fallon Post Office.
This coincides with Maine Street Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration and Hometown Christmas Craft Fair on Dec. 4-5.
Artists' work will be displayed in a tasteful, festive and boutique-style venue. For a $50 participation fee (or $40 for members) and only two hours of work at the faire, artists receive credit card services for their customers at the faire, advertising prior to the event and a one-stop check out service that includes tissue and merchandise bags. Space is limited.
A portion of the participation fee will be donated to Domestic Violence Intervention of Fallon.

Elks Club has ‘taco night'
It's “Taco Night” on Oct. 16 at the Elks Club, 93 W. Center St., with cocktails at 5 p.m., and dinner served at 6 p.m.
Cost is $7 adults, and $4 children 10 and under.
The menu is crisp or soft tortilla, taco meat with all the fixings and dessert.
Chamber luncheon is Thursday
The Fallon Chamber of Commerce offers its monthly luncheon the third Thursday of each month at noon at the Convention Center. For information, call the Chamber office at 423-2544.
