The Churchill Arts Council will present screenings of three classic films as part of its “Lives of the Artists” series during the month of October at the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park Street, Fallon.
“Artemisia,” a 1997 portrayal of the life of the Baroque artist, Artemisia Gentilischi, will kick off the series tonight. Doors and the art bar will open at 6 p.m. and the film will screen at 7 p.m..
Tickets for the film will be available in the Art Bar and are $7 for CAC members and $10 for non-members.
Special passes for all three films — $18 for CAC members, $27 for nonmembers—will be available for purchase tonight only. For more information, please call 423-1440.
“Artemisia” is a portrayal of the early life of the Italian Baroque artist, Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653), one of the first female painters whose work was recorded in the art historical canon. It tells the story of her youth when she was guided and protected by her father, Orazio, also a painter.
She became even more well-known because of a much contested and disputed court case in which her teacher, Agostino Tassi, was accused of raping her.
The movie stars Valentina Cervi and Michel Serrault and was directed by Agnés Merlet. It was nominated for a Golden Globe Award (Best Foreign Film), and for Best Film at the Chicago International Film Festival.
It also received nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Costumes at the César Awards (French Academy Awards) and won Best Feature Film at the Avignon/New York Film Festival.
The “Lives of the Artists” series will continue with showings of “Camille Claudel,” the 1998 film on the late nineteenth century sculptor, featuring Isabelle Adjani and Gerard Depardieu, on Oct.16.
The series will conclude with “Frida,” the much-acclaimed 2002 story of the life of painter Frida Kahlo, featuring Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina, on Oct. 23.
“The Lives of the Artists” film series is sponsored, in part, by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
