Country music legend visits Fallon

When KHWG Radio owner Dee Gregory called country music legend Rex Allen Jr. and asked if he would consider visiting Fallon the next time he was in Reno, Gregory didn't expect Allen to respond, “I will be in Reno Friday.”

Allen is a country music singer, a member of the Western Music Hall of Fame and the first performer allowed to sing on the Great Wall of China. He starred in the 1990s television shows “The Statler Brothers Show” and “Yesteryear” and narrated the movie “Me, Myself, and Irene.” He follows in the footsteps of his father, Rex Allen Sr., a country singer, actor and narrator for Walt Disney.

The 62-year-old singer was already planning to visit Reno for the air show when Gregory called, and he jumped at the opportunity to be on KHWG.

“They're playing the music I like to hear,” Allen said. “They're playing classic country music. I don't really like the direction that country music is in today. The station here plays the kind of music I like to hear, and I want to support them.”

Allen said current country music is increasingly like 1980s rock and is geared toward the younger generations and younger concerns.

“The songs like that do not appeal to me,” Allen said. “Classic country music deals with life as I know it.”

Allen wants to support those who, like him, love music that speaks to them, and Gregory said Fallon listeners were ecstatic.

“What he has done for the industry as a second generation, he's paved the way for what we do.” Gregory said. “If it weren't for him — his dad — there'd be no reason for the KHWG radio station.”

Allen said he was happy to visit fans who are often overlooked by the entertainment industry.

“It's Middle America — it's Fallon, Nevada — there's a lot of nice people here,” Allen said. “They are not target-marketing to Middle America. They are targeting Los Angeles and New York. What about Fallon?”

Allen was also excited to have a live audience in the radio station Friday and the opportunity to speak with fans.

“A lot of people would come up and say I saw your dad in Merced, Calif., when I was 10 years old — they'll always brighten and smile,” Allen said. “That's a heritage to be proud of, not to sweep under the carpet. When I see that, it's really cool.”

Allen visits Reno every year and is considering an annual visit to KHWG, which Gregory said listeners would love.

“Our listeners were very very excited,” Gregory said. “Our listeners are very grateful.”
