Lucile (Wenthe) Sustacha, 90, beloved mother, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully, Sept. 19, 2009 in Fallon. She was born Jan. 10, 1919 in Sumner, Iowa. She was the fifth of eight children born to William and Anna Wenthe. Lucile was educated in Iowa, graduated from Sumner High School and received her teaching certificate from Upper Iowa University. She began her teaching career in a rural elementary school in Burt, Iowa, teaching there for three years.
In 1942 she accepted a teaching position in Lamoille, Nev., teaching there for one year, then moving to Montello, Nev. While teaching in Lamoille, she met her future husband, Joe Sustacha Jr. They were married Dec. 21, 1945. Lucile quit teaching and focused her energy on being a ranch wife and raising their four children. In addition to her many ranch chores she found time to be a 4-H leader and was actively involved in the Lamoille Women's Club, Elko County Cowbelles and Nevada Cowbelles. Through her involvement and support of the Future Farmers of America, she was awarded Honorary Membership in the Ruby Mountain FFA and the Nevada FFA. She and Joe divorced in 1979.
Lucile had an enduring passion for education and decided to return to teaching. Although she held a lifetime teaching certificate in Nevada, changes in licensing requirements forced her to return to school to pursue her passion for teaching. She enrolled at UNR and graduated in 1980 with a Bachelors of Education degree. She returned to Elko County, where she taught for two years on the IL Ranch. She moved to Reno where she continued to work until 1995 when she moved to Fallon. While in Reno, Lucile was very active with the Master Gardener Program. She volunteered as a docent at the May Museum, the Oxbow Nature Study Area and assisted with the xeriscape plantings at the Reno Airport. After moving to Fallon, she continued to volunteer at the Churchill County Museum.
Lucile was preceded in death by one son, Joe III and four brothers and sisters. She is survived by two sons, John of Lamoille and Jim (Karen) of Fallon; daughter, Janice of Fallon; five grandchildren, Torie Sandberg, Kevin Anderson, John Robert Sustacha, Tessa Sustacha and Joe Sustacha; four great-grandchildren, Macie, Addison, Baylor and Kelsey; sisters, Hilda Oelrich and Alice Wendland and brother, Edward Wenthe of Iowa.
A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 28 at the Little Church of the Crossroads in Lamoille. Interment will be at the Elko Cemetery.
