Fernley Senior Rodeo, Pinenut Festival begin Saturday



Fernley's Senior Pro Rodeo returns Saturday and Sunday at the Out of Town Park.

The annual event, which is sponsored by the Fernley Chamber of Commerce, attracts contestants 40 years of age and older from Nevada, California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Canada to compete for cash and awards as well as to earn points to compete in the National Senior Pro Event Finals.

According to the National Senior Pro Rodeo Association, about 140 contestants have signed up for the rodeo. This is the second-to-last stop on the Gold Rush circuit. The Fallon Senior Pro Rodeo next weekend closes out the regular season with the national finals wrapping up the year in late October.

Tickets to this year's rodeo are adults, $7; children 13-17, $5; and children 12 and under, free with a paying adult. Tickets may be purchased at the Fernley Chamber of Commerce office, local businesses or at the gate.

The rodeo schedule for Saturday has slack beginning at 9 a.m. The VIP gazebo is open from 1-3 p.m. The rodeo's grand entrance begins at 3 p.m., with the Calcutta starting at 8 p.m. at the Pioneer Crossing Casino.

Slack begins one hour earlier on Sunday at 8 a.m., and the gazebo is open from noon to 2 p.m. The action starts at 2 p.m. After the rodeo, the closing party and awards presentation will be conducted at Mo's Wigwam.

The eighth annual Fallon Senior Pro Rodeo kicks off Sept. 26 at the Churchill County Fairgrounds. A Calcutta is slated for the Stockman's Sept. 25 at 6 p.m.

Tickets for the Fallon rodeo are $5, and children 5 and under are free. Children's events include stick horse barrel racing, dummy roping and muttin bustin'.

South of Fallon in Schurz is the 79th annual Pinenut Festival held in conjunction with the Walker River Paiute Tribe. The two-day festival begins with the grand entry at noon on Saturday and at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

“Honoring our Future,” the theme of this year's festival has a variety of activities including a pow wow contest, fun run/walk, Indian car contest, horse shoe tournament, adult handgames, arm wrestling, cradleboard contest, rodeo, children's games and teen dance.

The host drum is Midnight Express from Minneapolis.

The festival is located near the Walker River and alongside the highway in Schurz, 40 miles south of Fallon on U.S. Highway 95.
