A number of horses were stolen from the Big Five ranch at Lovelock on the night of August 8th. ** Last Thursday evening the store of J.F. Moody at Mina took fire and was destroyed. The post office was also burned but the registered mail was saved. ** The Mining Congress will open at Goldfield Sept. 27. Churchill County will make good showing: Wonder is sending about 1,000 pounds of splendid ore exhibits as will Fairview.
** Sixty inches of water flowing over the top of an artesian well on the J.F. Miller ranch in the Vegas valley, is the latest record in the development of sub-surface water in southern Nevada.
It will irrigate 60 acres of alfalfa or 100 acres of fruit trees or 120 acres of grape vines.

MORE ATTRACTIONS DUE FOR '49 SHOW. Giant Display Fireworks set for Saturday. Everything is ready for the three-day event including improvements at the State Fair Grounds and enlarging of the dancing pavilion. The '49 camp has also been set up.

FOOT AMPUTATED FOR WELL WORKER. Ralph Barrow of San Jose, employee of the company drilling a well for the city of Fallon, got his foot caught in a rope which pulled the member into the rigging machinery. He was taken immediately to the Carmichael hospital where it was found necessary to completely amputate the foot. Barrow is 28 years old.

MAN SHOT TO DEATH IN BAR. First Degree Murder Charges Filed Today against a 34-year-old construction worker following the fatal barroom shooting Sunday night of a 26-year-old ranch hand. Clay E. Tyree, 26, died in Churchill Public Hospital at 9:09 p.m. Sunday, one hour and 14 minutes after being shot five times during an argument with drinking companion Howard P. Thomas, 34, according to Chief of Police Pete Lugaski.

RAIN, COOL AIR END HEAT WAVE. Wednesday's sudden drop in temperatures to 73 from Tuesday's 91 broke a heat spell of 41 days when the temperature consistently stayed over 90 degrees. During the 41 days of extreme heat, 17 days found the mercury above 100. Wednesday's rainfall of .25 inches also marked the first time in 88 days any appreciable rain had fallen on the Lahontan Valley.
