Saturday is Farmers Market Day in Fernley

Fernley Mayor Todd Cutler has proclaimed Saturday as “Farmers Market Day.”

Marking this year's opening of the Fernley Farmers Market, the proclamation espoused the benefits of fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs for a healthy diet. The Market will be open each Saturday until Oct. 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at In-Town Park.

Farmers, home growers and vendors from Fernley, Fallon and other areas (some as far away as California) will operate booths weekly to offer fresh produce and other products.

Free space is available for farmers, home growers and community garden producers with some restrictions — (Check with Vern Perry, vendor relations coordinator, for clarification).

For other vendors, fees vary. 10-foot by 10-foot spaces are offered at a weekly fee for season pass holders of $17 per week or $180 for a Season Pass that includes both Saturday and Sunday during the Labor Day weekend free.

Nonseason pass vendors' fee is $20 per day and $35 for Labor Day weekend. Nonprofit organizations pay $10 per day.

Each vendor must have an EZ-UP or pop-up tent. Each unit must be weighted down to resist the frequent Fernley winds.

Although registration is recommended prior to the first market, space will be available for on-the-spot registration for those vendors that show up at the last minute.

The list of 2008 vendors and sponsors, many of which organizers are hoping will return for 2009 follows: Fernley/Wadsworth Lions Club, Mulberry Cottage Crafters, Lattin Farms, Save Money At the Pump, Hanly's Hounds Pooper Scoopers, Eternal Image, The Bag Lady, 3 Marias Clothes and Specialty Items, J-C Spice it Up Ketchup, Wilseya4fun Bounce House, Malcolm Woods DJ Service, Party Plan-it Party Goods, Logan Ice Cream, Cookie Lee Jewelry, Tupperware, Domino's Pizza, Garden District Nursery, The Body's Shop Massage, Gems by Joyce and Child ID program by Robert Gleason Farmers Insurance.

XL Hospice of Fallon, Fruit Factory (back by popular demand from California, according to CJ Gueldner, Market Coordinator) and Scenty Candles will have booths this season. The Fernley Multicultural Festival will be taking care of the concessions.

The 2009 Fernley Farmers Market Cookbook (a fundraising project from last year's market) will be available for $15 plus shipping (unless sold locally). Each book comes with a state of Nevada cookie cutter. While the cookbook was put together to help fund the Farmers Market, a portion of the proceeds will also be donated to the Fernley/Wadsworth Lions Club.

Other special events will be planned throughout the season as opportunities present themselves, according to Gueldner.

Another change this year is that Market Coordinator CJ Gueldner is assisted by a Vendor Relations Coordinator Vern Perry. The Perry family has participated in past Markets as Mulberry Cottage Crafters.
