Rockin' the Blue and Gold

The month of June was a very busy one for the Churchill County FFA.

It started out with the first chapter meeting with the new officer team. It was great for the members to get to know the officer team better and to get a feel of how the coming year is going to be.

On June 8-9 the officer team went on its officer retreat to Bench Creek Ranch. The interaction between the team was great so the planning meetings went smoothly.

We have many fun things planned for the year; we hope it will be very successful and memorable. We would like to send a special thank you to Paul Plouviez and Shizuko Shimada for their hospitality at Bench Creek Ranch.

Our chapter's twine recycling program is going great. We have been going two to three times a week. If you have twine that needs to be picked up, contact Jake at 217-8213 or Kadee at 287-2605. We would be glad to come pick it up.

Summer Leadership Camp (SLC) was June 22-25. The first day we split into our color groups and played some icebreaker games and got to know each other along with our color group leader, who was one of the Nevada FFA state officers.

That night the chapter competed in the lip-sync contest. This is always a lot of fun for the chapter; it is a favorite of ours, and we won.

The next day we participated in the rotating workshops (put on by the state officers), the Tahoe Extreme, and the zone officer interviews. The rotating workshops were great. They were very informational and taught us a lot of things ranging from relationships to turning challenges into opportunities.

The Tahoe Extreme is a camp favorite. There are different games that the color groups compete in such as: egg toss, spider web, three legged race and the tug-o-war. Needless to say, the group with a few Churchill County FFA officers and many members won the Tahoe extreme. Congratulations to the winners.

Three members from Churchill County applied for a respective Western Zone office position. All three applicants earned an office. Congratulations to Jake Olsen, Western Zone reporter; Kadee Buckmaster, Western Zone secretary and Christina Fagundes, Western Zone president.

On Wednesday we broke into our grade levels (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) and went to workshops put on by the state officers. State officers told us about many of the opportunities through the FFA and how it could help us in our future endeavors. Later that night we participated in the annual mock banquet.

We listened to Assemblyman James Settlemeyer and National FFA Officer Candidate Jimmy Lotspeich speak about how FFA helped them get to where they are today. Also, there was a dance afterward.

Thursday is always the worst day — we had to leave. Although we hated to go, we were so tired we couldn't stay awake on the bus.

June was a great month for the Churchill County FFA. We accomplished a lot and are hoping July will be just as successful. Thank you to everybody in the community that shows support for the FFA.
