Nevada brings strong team to this year's SSIR

FALLON - Nothing much separates Nevada's gold and silver high school rodeo members.

Some of the team might even view this weekend's 24th annual Silver State International Rodeo just as good as the National High School Finals Rodeo later this month in Farmington, N.M.

“It's pretty strong this year,” SSIR Executive Secretary Marcia de Braga said about Team Nevada. “There was a kid from Winnemucca who was real strong in calf roping, but had a disastrous state finals. That's a good example. On any given day anyone can beat them. There are a lot of stories like that. They're going to have a good team.”

Almost 50 cowboys and cowgirls will suit up for competition, trying to redeem themselves from missing the cut for nationals. It's not only a second chance at winning an individual title, but team pride is also on the line as Utah is the heavy favorite.

Only the top four in each category advanced to nationals, but the next six automatically earn an invitation to the SSIR.

Zachary Avila, Levi Laws, Javier Rodriguez, Blane Tibbals, Deven Bandazian and Josh Winans qualified in bull riding. Only two cowboys — Paeden Munger and Tibbals — didn't advance to nationals in bareback, but they were able to earn an SSIR bid. Victor Ugalde, Colt Capurro, Trevor Carrasco, Kevin Dalluge, Oakley Baker and Hank Filippini qualified in calf roping. Ken Collins, Trenton Montero, Seth Garrett, Dakota Eldridge and Filippini earned a trip in boys' cutting to the SSIR.

Dustan Birrer, Montero, Rowdy Hutchison, Efren Benavides, Nick Castillo and Christian Stremler advanced to the SSIR in saddle bronc, while Nick Nalder and Mitch Rhodes qualified in steer wrestling.

“On any given day these kids can beat the ones who go to nationals,” de Braga said. “I think the kids get tougher all the time. We got kids in Nevada that can team rope. We don't have a lot of rough stock riders. That might be where we're the weakest. Everything else we're real strong in.”

In barrel racing, Marisa Julian, Stephanie Fulstone, Amanda Mariluch, Danye Ennis and Brittany Rice qualified, while Mariah Wilcox, Kayla Bland, Morgan Howard, Elyse Heberger and Mariluch earned bids in breakaway roping. Bailey Corkill, Mariluch, Wilcox, DeeAnna Pasquale, Lyndsey Bell and Brooke Kieckbusch qualified in cutting, and Corkill, Kieckbusch, Heberger, Mariluch, Kayla Norcutt and Kelsie Leas made it in goat tying. Pole bending invitations were awarded to Corkill, Shelby Worthen, Leas, Shelby Scott, Alexandria Perkins and Mariluch.

Team roping honors went to Chase and Wyatt Williams, Bland and Wilcox, Colt Cappuro and Chase Wortman, Cody and Sean Castodio, Bradin Porter and Filippini, and Morgan McVay and Grant Denny.
