Fallon's Cal Ripken Baseball 11-70 All Star team opened state tournament play by pounding Sun Valley, 21-7, on Saturday evening at Oats Park.
Johnny Mayo batted 3-5 and drove in three runs to lead Fallon.Sage Orozco went 3-5 and hit a two-run home run. Brandon Beeghly and Clay Davidson drove in two runs each while Evan Bitter, Nolin Risk and Chase McElvain each batted one run in. McElvain pitched the first four innings to earn the win.
"We just played a good game" Fallon manager Rex Mayo said. "The kids hit the ball and played good defense."
Fallon jumped on Sun Valley with four runs in the top of the first inning. A double by Evan Bitter, singles by Johnny Mayo, Orozco and Shawn Rigsby, along with three Silver State errors, and six stolen bases produced the runs.
Sun Valley came back with a run in the bottom of the first on base hits by Alex Campbell and Jerry Picaso along with an RBI by Lorenzo Trujillo on a bloop fly to center. In the second inning, Sun Valley scored four runs to take the lead, 5-4 Three Fallon errors along with base hits by Tyler Tucker, Campbell and Trujillo put the designated home team in front. Tucker drove in one run and Trujillo batted in a pair.
Fallon regained the lead for good with four runs in the third. Mayo, Davidson, Rigsby and Beeghly collected base hits. Beeghly drove in two runs and Davidson had one RBI. Fallon led 8-5 and wouldn't trail or be tied again.
A Fallon error helped Sun Valley's Eugene Daily bat home a run in the bottom of the third. Then Fallon scored four more times in the top of the fourth to take a 12-6 lead. Aaron Bitter, Mayo, Orozco and Nolin Risk smacked base hits. Fallon scored one run on a suicide squeeze. Mayo was a third and broke for home on the pitch. Rigsby laid down the bunt, allowing Mayo to score.
Fallon blew the game wide open in the fifth with nine runs, taking a 21-6 lead. Orozco's home run was part of a six-hit inning that was helped along by two walks and three errors.
"It felt good," Orozco said of his home run. "It's a lot of hard work but they just come."
Fallon sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning. Mayo batted twice and drove in two runs.
McElvain allowed only one earned run and struck out two in picking up the win. Rigsby pitched the final two innings, allowing no earned runs. A dropped fly ball helped Silver State score one run in the fifth to account for the final score. The game ended after five innings on the 10-run rule.
Spanish Springs defeated Silver State, 12-2, in the early game. Silver State and Sun Vallley meet on Saturday at 3 p.m. in an elimination game. Fallon takes on Spanish Springs at 5:30 p.m. The loser meets the winner of the Silver State-Sun Valley tile in another elimination game at 7:30 p.m.
"It's going to be a tough game," Rex Mayo said of the impending tilt with Spanish Springs. "They've been counting on us winning and them winning. They came here expecting to play us."
Fallon's 12-70 All-Star team defeated Spanish Springs on Friday, 2-1 at Spanish Springs. No other details are available.
