Seven Fallon contestants qualify for SSIR

The vast majority of participants in the Silver State International Rodeo will travel to Fallon, hauling horses in trailers and filling up campgrounds and motels.

Seven of them, however, won't have to travel because they already live here.

Morgan Howard, Kenady Howard, Dylan Norcutt, Kayla Norcutt, Colt Capurro, Bailey Corkill and Kevin Dalluge are the Fallon residents who will be in the rodeo.

Howard will compete in breakaway roping and Kayla Norcutt is in goat tying and Capurro and Dalluge both go in calf roping, and Corkill will be in girls cutting, goat tying and pole bending. In team roping, sisters Morgan and Kenady Howard pair up, as will Dylan Norcutt with Martin Paris of Battle Mountain, Capurro with Chase Wortman of Yerington, and Dalluge with Brooke Pickbush of Reno.

Corkill had a solid season, winning the all-around cowgirl competition in 11 rodeos. Her pace won't slow down much in the summer as she will be in both the SSIR and the national finals, July 19-25 in Farmington, N.M., where she will compete in breakaway roping and team roping.

Contestants may compete in both rodeos, but only in different events.

Howard will also be in both rodeos. She will go to nationals in goat tying and pole bending. This will be her third appearance in the SSIR, she went last year in barrel racing and breakaway and took part two years ago in both those events and in goat tying.

Morgan Howard says she enjoys being in her hometown rodeo.

“I really love rodeoing at home because we get to draw a bigger crowd that knows us and is cheering for us, and my family gets to come because it's closer to home,” Howard said. “ I like it a lot. We travel so much during the season that if this rodeo wasn't in Fallon I don't think we would go.”

One of the highlights for Howard is getting to compete with her sister, where the family bond brings them closer together.

“It's so awesome. We get to practice together, and it think it's really cool,” Morgan Howard said. “Family has a much closer bond than just friends. We kind of get a little more competitive, and as team it makes us work that much harder. It's a very good experience and we're going to do good this coming week.”

Capurro is also heading for his third SSIR after qualifying in team roping and calf roping the past two years. He, too, is looking forward to performing before the home crowd.

“It's pretty nice, close to home and everything,” Capurro said. “It's pretty cool to see all the people who come from all over to be here in Fallon. And not having to travel makes it nice.”

Capurro will be in the national finals in boys cutting and steer wrestling.

Dylan Norcutt didn't know until recently that he would be in the rodeo. He and Paris were not among the original qualifyers, but were invited after a qualifying team elected not to participate.

“It feels pretty good (to be in it), just being in our home town we don't have to travel a lot,” Norcutt said. “I've never been in it so I think it's good. I didn't think I made it, then when they called to let me know I was pretty glad.”

Dalluge is heading for his second SSIR as a sophomore. He competed last year as a freshman in tiedown roping. As he sees it, being in a hometown rodeo is no big deal.

“It doesn't feel different, it's just another rodeo,” Dalluge said. “But it will be a little more fun because I get to be in team roping this year.”
