Fallon's Top Gun Raceway staged its first evening races of the season on Saturday, and it turned out to be a night dominated by Mopar.
Only three races were held as the Summit ET series took the evening off, giving way to Powder Puff races, Sport Compact and Test and Tune.
“We had a good number of cars that did Test and Tune with a lot of grudge racing,” Raceway spokesman John Stauverman said. “We had a real good time.”
The Powder Puff race was an all Mopar final, won by Lacie Roumpz in a 1974 Plymouth Duster in a time of 16.025 seconds at 76.59 mph. Deidra Jackson ('06 Dodge Charger) finished second in 17.435 at 83.81. Johnson was given a head start due to a slower dial-in time, but Roumpz was able to over take her for the win.
Semifinalists were Jolean Boag ('94 Honda) and Gwen Hughes ('87 Mustang). The Powder Puff races were part of Girls Night, where all women spectators were admitted free and they could race for $10.
The Jackpot race was another all Mopar final. Dave DuBose won the race, and the 100 percent payback prize that came with it, in his '70 Roadrunner in 12.507 at 106.57. Ed Hughes, driving a '64 Ford pickup truck powered by a Chrysler 383 engine, finished second in 15.494 at 90.45. Gwen Hughes ('87 Mustang) finished third.
The Sports Compact Import race saw an close finish in a race that ended prematurely. Vladimir Tagubansa's car broke down and couldn't race in the final, so the semi-final between Jeffery Swiftel and Kevin Gonzalez became the final.
It was a close race between two drivers with nearly equal reaction times. When the winners light came on it favored Jeff Swiftel ('89 Mustang) by less than 1/10 of a second over Kevin Gonzalez ('92 Honda). Swiftel won in 14.913 at 95.53 with Gonzalez right behind in 15.122 at 86.27. Tagubansa finished third.
Top Gun is back in action on July 17 at 6 p.m. with $5 Friday, Quick 16 and Test and Tune races. The action continues on July 18 at 7 p.m. with the ninth Summit ET races of the season and the second Ford Invitational and ET Challenge.
AEvents through August will be held in the evening.
1“That's to keep the racers out of the dead heat,” Stauverman said.
