Fallon youngsters ages 8-to-12 who want to learn to play basketball will have the chance to do so next month.

And they'll be learning from a pair of well decorated college basketball players.

Western Nevada College is sponsoring a youth basketball camp at Churchill County High School from July 13-17. The cost per camper is $100 with a family discount of $250 for three campers.

Leading the camp will be 2005 CCHS graduate Liz Lewis, who recently completed her college basketball career at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont. Joining her will be teammate Janie Rayback. Both players earned numerous honors in high school and college.

“These young ladies have just completed their fourth year of collegiate basketball, and we are very pleased to have them in our community this summer and willing to provide instruction for our young basketball players,” said Bus Scharmann, dean of the WNC Fallon campus.

Lewis was a three-year starter at guard for the Greenwave, then played for two seasons at Dixie State College in St. George, Utah before transferring to Rocky. She was named to the All-Frontier Conference first team her junior and senior years and won the team's Most Valuable Person award last year. This year she won the Arthur and Linda DeRosier award as the outstanding senior athlete that represents the true spirit of Rocky Mountain College, was the conference's leading scorer and an honorable mention All-American.

Lewis wants to be a college basketball coach and hopes that running the camp will help lead to that.

“I'm very excited,” Lewis said. “It's a good opportunity to start my coaching career.”

Lewis, who will return to Rocky in the fall to complete her undergraduate studies in physical education and be a student assistant coach for the Battlin' Bears, has coached at hoops camps dating back to her high school days. This will be her first go round as a camp director. She says the camp will focus on the fundamentals of basketball.

“We'll focus a lot on passing, dribbling, shooting, stuff like that. We'll play some games and some competitions and awards will be handed out,” Lewis said. “The theme of the camp is attitude and effort makes a difference. Each day we'll talk about something to improve our attitude and effort in life so that we can become not only better basketball players but better people.”

Rayback is from Afton, Wyo., a town with a population of about 2000. She won numerous awards at Star Valley High School then played for three seasons at Weber State University — an NCAA Division I program — before transferring to Rocky her senior year. She was the team co-captain and MVP, Frontier Conference leading scorer, and honorable mention All-American and member of the conference all-academic team.

Like Lewis, Rayback has been involved in coaching many basketball camps.

“At Weber State we put on camps all summer long,” Rayback said. “Throughout high school and at Rocky we did some. I've been involved with camps for as long as I can remember and have a lot of experience in that area.”

Rayback is a biological science major and wants to work in the medical field as either a physicians assistant, athletic trainer or in sports medicine. She says that basketball is her passion.

“I'd love to coach,” Rayback said. “That would be awesome. I love basketball and want to be around it for as long as I can. Somehow I'm going to remain involved in basketball.”

Helping with the camp with be two other former Greenwave players, Mallorie Getto and Michelle Beach. Getto currently plays basketball for Fresno Pacific University, and Beach recently concluded her college softball career at UNR.
