Museum's summer lecture series coming

The Churchill County Museum Association presents its Summer Lecture Series Wednesdays in July at 7:30 p.m. at the museum:

• July 1: How Soup and Sin Saved the Silver State — Listen as Mella Harmon, from Kautz Environmental Consultants in Reno, presents her topic on how the state of Nevada saw its way through the Great Depression.

• July 8: Ghost Towns and Beautiful Places in the Stillwater Mountains — Local resident Debbie Moorhead is known for her passionate interest in the outdoor places of Nevada. She has led numerous trips into the Nevada wilds through her program offered by Churchill County Parks and Recreation.

Be an armchair traveler as Moorhead takes you to ghost towns and beautiful canyons, a program illustrated with her beautiful photography!

• July 15: An Evening of “Mystery Music” — Have you ever wondered why a song was written, what its title means, or where those crazy lyrics came from? Come spend an evening with musician Connie Kretschmer and retired library maverick Maranne Thieme and get some of those nagging questions finally answered.

Kretschmer is a music teacher at Yerington Middle School and lives in Wellington. She has recently provided music for the grand opening for the Western Folklife Center's traveling exhibit “Lingo of Our Calling.” Thieme is a recently retired Public Services Manager for the Lyon County Library System who lives in Smith.

• July 22: Mules: Yesterday and Today — While many don't know it, mules were used extensively in Lahontan Valley in the early decades of the 20th century. Mule teams were used in the building of Derby and Lahontan dams and on farms in the area.

Local resident Kathy Davis raises, trains and works with mules every day. Join her as she gives an illustrated overview of the history of this animal.

For information, call the museum at 423-3677.
