CAC gearing up for 2009-10 season; noteworthy musical events @ ArtTown

Last weekend's free city-sponsored concert with the Red Stick Ramblers was quite the success with some good music enjoyed by all. And, there will be another outdoor concert in August with Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums.

The Churchill Arts Council, which assists the city in putting on the free in-the-park events, is in the process of finalizing its events for its 2009-10 season—its 23rd—and the council's season brochure will be available next month. If you are not on the mailing list and would like to receive this, call 423-1440 or email charts@phonewave.net

The Aug. 22 in-the-park concert will present Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums, featuring Miss Carmen Getit.

This Bay Area-based sextet has performed a mélange of Jump Blues, Swing, Big Band Jazz and other rare gems inspired by the '30s, '40s and '50s at venues around the country from Lincoln Center and the Montreux Jazz Festival to Good Morning America, Yoshi's and the San Francisco Blues Festival.

They bring an intense energy, personal magnetism and knowing wit to their musical portrayals of the battle between the sexes. It's more than likely to be another evening of great music under the stars.

CAC's September performance will feature Amy X Neuburg & the Cello ChiXtet.

Neuburg is a classically-trained singer, composer and electronica whiz, who throughout her career has bridged boundaries between classical, popular and experimental musics.

She's presented performances at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco as well as at New York's Symphony Space and Joe's Pub and the Berlin International Poetry Festival.

Amy and the ChiXtet —Jess Ivry, Elaine Kreston and Beth Vandervennet —combine voice, cello trio, electronic percussion with live looping and processing in innovative songs that explore the deceits, battles and triumphs within personal relationships.

Reno's ArtTown is gearing up for its month-long series of arts events. Some musical offerings of note in the series include folk-singer and veteran of the 1969 Woodstock Festival Richie Havens on July 1 and award-winning Jazz trumpeter Chris Botti on the 10th.

Other musical offerings include Bluegrass sensations Rhonda Vincent & the Rage (who performed at the Barkley Theatre here a few years back) on July 25; the Afro Cuban salsa band from Glasgow (yes, Glasgow!), Salsa Celtica on July 22; and the spirited and infectious Mariachi Sol de Mexico on July 29.
