Fallon youth shooter Tanner Mayberry has headed off for a week of shooting at Camp O'Connell, the California Grizzlies Junior Shooting Clinic in Coalinga, Calif.
The camp is run by retired Maj. Jim O'Connell, a former Marine Corps OV-10 Bronco pilot and coach of the U.S. Marine Corps shooting team. During the week, Mayberry will fire over 1,000 rounds. He will shoot daily and attend classes on improving his shooting skills. The team members eat breakfast at 6 a.m., are on the range by 7 a.m., shoot until 2 p.m. then return to camp for lunch and afternoon lectures.
In the evening, the team members clean their firearms then watch movies or go skating. The week concludes with an “Over the Course” team shooting match on June 27 and 28.
Mayberry is the only junior highpower rifle shooter from Nevada participating in the National Rifle Matches and participates as a member of the California junior team by NRA and CMP rules. He shoots a Bushmaster AR-15 DCM-XR (civilian version of an M-16), with hand-loaded ammunition. He will head to Camp Perry, Ohio, for the National Highpower Rifle Matches beginning the first week of August. This is his third year at the National Matches. He will be competing as an Expert Rifleman and hopes to earn his Master Rifleman rating this year.
