Reno Artown begins July 1

Artown, the nationally celebrated month-long summer arts festival in Reno once again puts the city and arts in the spotlight with more than 60 percent of its more than 400 events free — an average of eight unique events at no cost each day.

With events and exhibits throughout July geared toward all ages spending time with family and friends is as easy as selecting an event and showing up. Produced by 100 partners citywide, Artown brings to life theater, dance, film and history as well as multicultural, musical, visual and performing arts.

Beginning July 1, the festival immerses first-timers and returning attendees in the arts with free events including:

• Opening Night: Events begin at 2 p.m. at downtown's West Street Market with Discover Gelatin Prints, a part of the festival's ongoing Discover the Arts series. The hands-on workshop geared towards children features festival artist Candace Nicol demonstrating printmaking techniques.

Immediately following, from 4 – 7 p.m. on the west island of Wingfield Park, Body Masterpiece will transform 260 children into butterflies, super heroes and wild animals through face painting. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Artown at (775) 322-1538.

The evening continues on stage in Wingfield Park with a concert by Richie Havens, the artist that opened Woodstock in 1969. Havens captivates crowds with his soulful singing style and message of brotherhood and personal freedom most notably on songs such as “Freedom,” “Here Comes the Sun” and “The Long Road.” Sponsored by City of Reno Arts and Culture Commission, Friends of Artown and MomsLikeMe.com.

• Discover the Arts: Each weekday in July children and families learn about a variety of art forms at free hands-on workshops during the Discover the Arts series. The series includes sessions highlighting theater, visual arts, dance, music and even poetry and features demonstrations by Hudson Vagabond Puppets, Reno Jazz Orchestra and Artown poster artist Candace Nicol, just to name a few.

Sponsored by Northern Nevada Dairymen, Chartrand Foundation and Lemelson Education and Assistance Program.
