Fallon will be well represented at the Nevada State High School Rodeo Finals this weekend in Winnemucca.
The event gets underway on Thursday at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds. Performances are on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. with the top 15 finals on Sunday at 10 a.m.
First through fourth-place finishers qualify for the National High School Rodeo finals in Farmington, N.M., July 19-25. Fifth through 10th place finishers qualify for the Silver State International Rodeo in Fallon July 4-9.
Fifteen contestants from Fallon will participate in the state finals, including 14 members of the Fallon High School Rodeo Club along with independent competitor Bailey Corkill.
“We have an outstanding team,” rodeo club director Jane Capurro said. “We have people sitting in first and second place in their respective events.”
Corkill won the all-around cowgirl title at 11 high school rodeos this season. She will compete in breakaway roping, girls cutting, goat tying and in team roping with partner Dakota Eldridge of Elko. Corkill has advanced to the national finals the last two years.
Marisa Julian competes in six events, including barrel racing, breakaway roping, girls cutting, goat tying, pole bending and in team roping with Tyler Wolf of Elko. Kenady Howard goes in barrels, breakaway, goat tying, and team roping with Kayla Norcutt, who will also compete in breakaway roping and goat tying. Claire-Marie Ward will see action in breakaway roping, goat tying and pole bending. Morgan Howard goes in barrel racing, breakaway roping, goat tying and team roping with Gabriella Madraso.
For the boys, Colt Capurro will compete in cutting, steer wrestling, tiedown roping and in team roping with Yerington's Chase Wortman. Terynn Archuleta competes in steer wrestling, and with Kevin Dalluge in team roping.
Also competing for Fallon are Chelsea and Haley Hubner in barrel racing, Jordan Norcutt in breakaway roping, Trinette Requina in breakaway roping and goat tying and Kathryn Durst in pole bending.
“Most of our members are within the top 10 in the state of Nevada,” Jane Capurro said. “So I think they're going to do great.”
