The mayor, city council and city of Fallon, in cooperation with the Churchill Arts Council, will be presenting two free outdoor concerts this summer on the Centennial Stage in Oats Park.
The first one is coming up on June 20 with the Red Stick Ramblers. The Ramblers hail from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they met while attending Louisiana State University and the members of the quintet are: Eric Frey (bass and vocals), Glenn Fields (drums), Linzay Young (fiddle and lead vocals), Kevin Wimmer (fiddle and vocals), and Chass Justus (guitar and vocals).
The music of the Ramblers is upbeat, energetic and hard-driving, laced with a witty sense of humor. It reflects many facets of Louisiana culture and blends Cajun with country, western swing, even bluegrass, gypsy jazz and old time string band music into a unique hybrid all their own, one that continually uncovers and re-expresses new facets of the various musical styles. They have a contagious flair and an infectious joie de vivre.
While very much steeped in the traditions of these musics, the Ramblers consistently reinvent the tradition while remaining conscious of their deeply felt roots.
This contributes, in no small part to their popularitythey perform more than 200 dates a year at a variety of venues from south Louisiana dance halls to festivals, clubs and theatres.
Theyve also backed-up artists such as Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy and their intuitive understanding of the social aspects of Cajun/Louisiana culture ways in which food, family, friendship music and dance are intertwined is the perfect mix for Fallons outdoor summer concerts.
The group has released four CDs, some of which were produced by Dirk Powell whose band performed here along with Balfa Toujours a few years back and in the coming weeks well take a look at some of their more recent albums
So mark you calendars for June 20. Plan on getting together with family and friends, bring a picnic supper and enjoy an outstanding evening of music under the stars.
The Art Bar in the Oats Park Art Center will also be open following the performance. For information on the concert, contact the Churchill Arts Council at 423-1440.
