Memorial horse and tack sale coming Saturday

The family of Shellie Kay Melbye Quillan will hold a memorial horse and tack sale April 25 at Nevada Livestock Marketing, 1025 S. Allen Road. Horses, ponies, donkeys and mules will be for sale, along with tack. The tack sale starts at 10 a.m. and the horse sale starts at 1 p.m.

All horses must go through the ring, and no alley trading is allowed since this is a fundraiser. Horse sellers are asked to remember the brand inspection. The restaurant will also be open on Saturday. For information call Mike Baker at 423-7760 or Sheena Quillan at 426-8553 or 217-1228.

Class of 1979 reunion meeting Saturday

The Churchill County High School class of 1979 classmates will celebrate its 30 year reunion August 14-15. Visit www.cchs1979.webs.com for all the details. Economic development workshop set for Tuesday in the county commission chambers

The Churchill County Planning Commission is having public workshops to solicit input in order to update the county’s Master Plan. A workshop on tourism will be April 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the commission chambers at the County Administration Building, 155 N. Taylor St.

The workshop will explore the benefits of local tourism and the events planned for 2009, including how the community can support and expand on existing events and how to possibly create new business and industry from tourism. An RSVP is requested to the Planning Department at 423-7627, but the workshop is open to all residents.

Ducks Unlimited BBQ lunch and fundraiser set for Saturday at the fairgrounds

Organizers are attempting to establish a Fallon chapter of Ducks Unlimited. A fundraiser and barbecue lunch are scheduled for April 25 at the Dry Gulch Saloon at the Churchill County Fairgrounds. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at 1 p.m. The raffle and auction will start at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $50 per person or $250 to become a sponsor of this volunteer-based nonprofit organization committed to wetlands conservation and duck hunting.

Emblem Club serves dinner Friday, Elks serve breakfast Sunday at the Elks Lodge

The Emblem Club, a sister organization to the Elks Club, will serve a fundraising dinner April 24 at the Elks Lodge, 93 W. Center St. The cost is $8 for adults, and the menu includes a roast beef dinner with sides and a dessert. All proceeds will benefit the Emblem Club’s charities.

The Elks will serve breakfast April 26 from 8-10:15 a.m. at the Elks Lodge. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 10 years and under. The menu includes biscuits and gravy, Belgian waffles, grits and traditional breakfast items.

Weekly thrift store specials

Fallon Industries Thrift Store, 165 Maine St., is asking the community for donations of furniture, knick knacks and other unique items. Donations are accepted only at 1520 S. Maine St. or call 423-4760 ext. 232 to schedule a donation pickup.

All proceeds help provide services to individuals with developmental disabilitiesand families in need of household items.

Specials for April 20-25 are as follows: yellow tagged clothing items are 50 percent off and red tagged clothing items are 25 percent off. Luggage and bags are 35 percent off. Also, dishes, material and craft items will be 25 percent off. Saturday features the regular $5 bag sale.

Open burning scheduled for April 13-27

The Fallon/Churchill County Fire Marshal’s office has scheduled April 13-27 for open burning within the Fallon city limits. Year-round open burning is still in effect for Churchill County. The fire marshal requires the following:

• No burning when winds are predicted to be in excess of 10 mph on the day of burning. (When in doubt, put it out.)

• Residents must contact dispatcher at 423-3116 prior to burning.

• All burning, whether in the city or county, must be completed by 5:30 p.m. and monitored for a minimum of two hours after extinguishment.

• Clear an area down to mineral earth no less than 10 feet around debris pile and 5 to 10 feet around structures and other fuels to reduce the chance of accidental fire spread.

• DO NOT leave fire unattended and always have a shovel and water available.

• Fires must be completely extinguished and not allowed to smolder.
