Letters to the editor

NEED TO TAKE ACTION

Editor:

Did you know you could be sued in civil court if you lawfully use deadly force to protect yourself and/or your loved ones from a criminal attack? It is true.

But we now have a great opportunity to protect the rights of every citizen in Nevada to defend themselves in their homes and vehicles. Assemblyman Harry Mortenson (D-Clark County 42) has introduced Assembly Bill 288 in the Nevada Assembly and has been assigned to the Assembly Judiciary Committee.

AB-288, also known as “Castle Doctrine,” would change the law to state that if you act lawfully, neither your attacker nor his/her family could bring suit against you in civil court.

AB-288 is great news! And it should be enacted with no problems, right?

Wrong! Judiciary Committee Chairman Bernie Anderson, D-Washoe County 31, is ignoring his colleagues and constituents and indicates he will not allow the bill to be heard — effectively killing the bill.

What can you do? Exercise your right to communicate with elected representatives! E-mail, write, call, fax or visit them. Urge them to schedule a fair hearing for AB-288. Key Assemblymen —

Speaker of the Assembly, Barbara Buckley, D-Clark County 8;

Assembly Majority Leader, John Oceguera, D-Clark County 16;

Judiciary Committee Chairman, Bernie Anderson, D-Washoe County 31;

And, of course, contact your elected assemblyman. Urge every assemblyman to fight for a complete and fair hearing of AB-288.

If you have access to the internet, visit the Legislature’s official Web site www.leg.state.nv.us There you will find full contact information and a wealth of current legislature information.

AB-288 is a great bill and right for Nevada. It is co-sponsored by 19 other assemblymen from both political parties. But it will die unless we get involved to ensure it receives a Judiciary Committee hearing. The deadline for hearing bills is April 10, 2009, so please write soon!

The Case Against

SEN. Harry Reid

Editor:

I often marvel at the ability we have to fool ourselves. Every few years the citizens of our great state have the opportunity to send our most capable and qualified individuals to the United States Senate in order to represent Nevada’s interests at the federal level.

For the past 22 years, Nevadans have fooled themselves into believing the best man for the job was Senator Harry Reid. In 2010, Harry Reid is up for re-election again. It’s time for Nevadans to admit just who Harry Reid really is.

Reid is a man who has put his own political ambitions above the needs of Nevada and the nation. This includes obstructing immigration reform, funding projects to improve land he owns, and undercutting troops in Iraq. What is truly sad is that many Republicans are willing to sell Nevada short to help re-elect this man because of some false and unnecessary attachment to his role as Senate majority leader, a role which should alarm Republicans, not enamor them.

I find it impossible to believe that Nevada, or at least the Nevada that I know, would work to send Reid back to Washington in 2010. I find it difficult to believe that we would send a man so closely aligned with Nancy Pelosi, Chris Dodd and Barney Frank back to represent us. We are not them.

Nevada needs to be represented by someone with Nevada’s best interests at heart first. Reid has completely strayed from his Nevada roots and is now completely beholden to his party and those within that party’s power base in Washington. We do ourselves a disservice by continuing to send this man back to Washington simply to help Nancy Pelosi and President Obama pursue their radical agendas. It’s time for Nevada to send someone that will consider Nevada first.

PLAN COULD SOLVE MANY PROBLEMS

Editor:

Supposedly we are in “hard times.” The Stock Market has taken a downturn. The federal government has taken steps to correct this problem. The government’s solution is to just pour more money into the economy over the next few years, about $2 to $3 trillion. I think we as the “people” should take a look at reality. The problem could be resolved with much less expense.

There are over 50 million employed men and women who are over 50 years old. Why doesn’t the government just give them $1 million each. Yes, that is $50 million. Before they can receive the $1 million each, they have to promise to quit their jobs. That will create 50 million new jobs.

They have to poise to buy a new American-made car. This keeps Detroit and the auto industry going. 50-million cars! Then they have to promise to pay off their home mortgage or buy a new home. This keeps the housing market stable. This solution makes sense to me. It is much better than the nonsense going on in Washington.

$500 million against $3 or $4 trillion. I think it is time that we boot all of the “scissorbills” out of D.C. and really think if we want a socialistic government to destroy our constitution and run our lives.

Just remember, this country was founded upon the premise that the “scissorbills” in Washington are our employees and serve at our behest. We rule them. They don’t rule us. Too many of the younger generation have forgotten this.
