The Lahontan Valley produces exceptional athletes every year.
When the Greenwave cant qualify for the playoffs or have a winning season, it doesnt stop colleges from recruiting this schools best athletes. While the Reno-area schools attract most of the buzz with athletes committing to play at Nevada or some prestigious Division I school, Fallon receives its fair share.
Most recently, Aarik Wilson went to Indiana on a track and field scholarship, and then qualified for last summers Olympics by winning the triple jump trials event. Harvey Dahl, who played at Nevada for four seasons, started for the Atlanta Falcons, who made their first trip to the playoffs since Michael Vick was sent to the dog house.
Jennifer (Hucke) Wadhams a few years ago graduated from Stanford after helping the Cardinal to two national volleyball titles. Her former Greenwave teammates Monica Meihack, played volleyball at New Mexico as did Tristin (Adams) Johnson and Carly Sorensen at Nevada.
Its time, though, that we start keeping the community updated on Fallon grads currently competing at the college level.
Starting this Wednesday and appearing weekly, the LVN sports department is going to fill you in on everyone competing in spring college sports, like baseball, softball, swimming and golf. When the fall and winter seasons begin, well switch gears and inform you on those respective sports. Its been long overdue and the community deserves to know how its former Greenwave stars are doing at the next level, whether its competing in one of the three NCAA divisions or the NAIA.
Several athletes are making headlines with their respective schools already.
Rick Cornu, a 2006 Fallon grad whose baseball team never made the playoffs, is leading the Utah Utes in home runs and was named the Mountain West Conference player of the week earlier this month.
Michelle Beach has been instrumental to the Nevada softball teams success this season as the 2005 Fallon grad has delivered several clutch hits. Also at Nevada this season is Scott Smith, a 2006 CCHS grad who led the Greenwave to its first ever boys golf state title. Bethany Ellis is continuing her family tradition of softball at Morehead State and Casey Pomeroy is playing softball at Norfolk State.
Some of Fallons former athletes are also making noise in the smaller divisions.
Trevor de Braga and David Ranson are playing NAIA baseball for Sioux Falls and Mayville State, respectively, and Daniel Doty is in his second season of junior college baseball at Feather River. Marc Pereria arrived at Linfield College for his first season on the swim team.
If you know of anyone competing in a spring college sport and they werent mentioned, please contact us.
Former Greenwave athletes continue to make headlines with their colleges and starting Wednesday, well be bringing the headlines to you.
