100 Years Ago

News About Your Neighbors

•Chas Cirac, of Stillwater, was in Reno the past week on business. •Miss Margaret Day left Sunday afternoon for Carson City where she has accepted a position as engraving clerk for the Senate. •House and furnished house keeping rooms for let. Address E. P. Osgood. Box 357. •Tuesday afternoon there were 26 bags of mail for Fallon. That is considerable mail for one day but several days previous to this there had been no mail on account of the numerous snow slides. •Mr. Kruze sold one of his fine teams for $400. That speaks well for the horse market of Nevada.

City Council Meeting

The City Council meeting was taken up by talking over the proposition of supplying the city with water for domestic and fire purposes. Nothing definite has been done, but probably inside of the next week a mass meeting of the citizens will be held to decide on a plan, but no exact date has been set. This will take considerable meditation on the part of the council. The Churchill County Standard — January 21, 1909.

Hurt in a Runaway

E. P. Osgood was out in the Fairview district surveying some mining claims and one afternoon with his team he went up the hill and in turning around his wagon turned turtle and Mr. Osgood was underneath. The horses became frightened and began to run. The wagon tongue in some manner was broken loose after being dragged about 150 feet. This probably saved his life. The Churchill County Standard — January 21, 1909.

75 Years Ago

Airport Project Wins Approval

Fallon’s original airport project, development of the Legion airport site on the south edge of town, won the approval here Thursday of R. W. Overman, Nevada site inspector for the Depart of Commerce. Overman came to the conclusion that the best bet would be to develop one good east and west runway on the Legion port, and wired his recommendations to Washington. The Fallon Eagle — January 27, 1934.

Crew Talks to Club on Airport Plans

Lieutenant Ralston Crew was the speaker on the program at the regular meeting of the 20-30 club , and discussed plans for the Fallon airport to be developed with the aid of the federal government under the depart of commerce plan for extending a system of landing fields across the continent. The Fallon Eagle — January 27, 1934.

50 Years Ago

Fire at Hedge’s

The fire department was called out Monday to the Weldon Hedges place where a calf barn was on fire. Seven calves that were in the shed died. The alarm sounded a second time in town to call the second fire truck out with more water. The blaze apparently started when a heat lamp, kept in the shed to keep the calves warm, fell into the straw covering the floor. The Eagle – Standard January 20, 1959.

Firemen to Receive 2 Trucks

The Fallon area’s fire protection program is soon to be expanded with the purchase of two new fire trucks, fire Chief Lloyd Whalen said today. Being purchased for the city is a 750 gallon pumper and for the county will be a 500 gallon pumper. The old county truck will go to the County Road Department, to be used as a control measure for burning weeds. The Eagle – Standard January 23, 1959.
