In conjunction with the Hearts of Gold Cantaloupe Festival and Fallon’s Centennial celebration, professional boxing came to town in August with seven featured bouts.
“This show is a tribute to the fighters of this area's history and to celebrate the new boxing history that his being made in Northern Nevada today,” said Tommy and Terry Lane, from Let’s Get It On Promotions.
Looking to contributesimultaneously to Northern Nevada’s rich boxing history in small towns such as Ely, Tonopah and Goldfield, as well as contribute to the centennial celebration, the Lanes applied their formula when they presented the seven-bout card at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.
Dubbed “History in the Making,” the fight showcased Derek Hinkey and Ben Aragon in the main event. Hinkey floored Aragon just 2 minutes, 20 seconds into the fight to cap off a wild night of boxing.
In other fights, Raul Duhart, of Las Vegas, stopped Yerington's Andrew Rempp 1:37 into the first round. Jacob Chavez, 182, notched his first pro victory, scoring a four-round decision over Julio Diaz, 178 1/2, who was making his pro debut. David Springer of Las Vegas defeated Jose Pacheco, of Guanajuato, Mexico, and Big Clarence Tillman of Henderson scored a second-round knockout over Michael Goins, also of Las Vegas.
