FALLON - ’Tis the season — for movies!

“Cold weather is always the best time for movies,” said Cheryl McCormick, owner of Corky’s Mini Mart and Video Village.

Going to the theater or renting movies has practically become a tradition leading up to Christmas, with movies like “Twilight” and during the holidays with a variety of new releases.

This might be why Fallon Theatres and Blockbuster Video sales are doing well despite the economy.

Fallon Theatres’ sales are keeping up with other years, said owner Bob Erikson, and Blockbuster’s sales are doing better.

“They’re up!” said Lizbeth Lozano, Blockbuster store manager.

Lozano thinks it’s because they expanded their stores to include media technology like Blu-ray players.

Still, not all stores have escaped hard times.

“We’re having a problem because of Netflix,” McCormick said.

McCormick said Corky’s sales are up compared to the rest of the year but are down compared to other years, so she is having some major sales. New releases are going for $3.50, older movies for 98 cents for two days, buy three DVDs for $8.99 and all VHSs for 99 cents.

Movie venues don’t just attract with cheap prices. Erikson added that the holiday selection also makes movies popular.

On Christmas Eve, Fallon Theatres is playing the “The Tale of Despereaux,” and “Four Christmases.” On Christmas Day the theater will show “The Tale of Despereaux” and “Bedtime Stories.”

“The Tale of Despereaux,” starring Matthew Broderick, is a tale about an unaccepted mouse, who shows that what you look like isn’t who you are when he goes on a quest to rescue a kidnapped princess.

“Bedtime Stories,” starring Adam Sandler, is about a hotel handyman who discovers the stories he tells his niece and nephew come true. When he tries to use this new power to help his family, the kids’ additions turn the stories around on him.

Erikson said other big Christmas movies with heavier content will show in January or February. This includes films like “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” which stars Brad Pitt and is about a man who was born in his 80s and ages in reverse. Another big Christmas movie coming to Fallon next year is “Valkyrie,” which stars Tom Cruise and is about a plan to assassinate Adolph Hitler during World War II.

“When kids are out of school, we focus on family entertainment,” Erikson said.

There are also some great selections in video stores right now. The most popular rented movies from Corky’s are “Hancock,” “The Dark Knight,” “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who” and “Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.” Blockbuster’s most popular has been “Mamma Mia!”

These are the most popular for the moment, however, because much more is coming. McCormick said Corky’s will get “Eagle Eye” and “Burn After Reading” Christmas week. Lozano said Blockbuster is expecting “Traitor,” “The House Bunny” and “The Women” along with “Death Race” and “Burn After Reading” Christmas week.

Whether it is a part of family tradition or the need for low-cost entertainment, there is plenty from which to choose at Fallon Theatres and Fallon’s video stores this Christmas.

Fallon Theatres will have two showings Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For listings call 423-4454. Video Village is open Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas and Blockbuster is open throughout the holiday.
