Fallon boys dump Damonte for sixth win

RENO — When Will Ferrell starred in “Old School,” his character, Frank, summed up what a basketball team should do if it wants to win.

“We’ve gotta keep our composure,” he said before flinging himself into a ring of fire during his fraternity’s team spirit competition.

Those five words were vital to the Greenwave’s first Sierra League road game of the season.

When fouls and calls weren’t going their way, the Greenwave stayed calm, didn’t panic and buried 12 fourth-quarter free throws as they came back to beat Damonte Ranch, 57-44, on Thursday.

With the scored tied at 33 in the fourth quarter, the final seven minutes came down to which team would rattle first. After taking the lead for good on Russell Smith’s 3-pointer, 36-33, the Greenwave (2-0, 6-2) relied on its defense to crack the Mustangs. Turnovers followed by penetration toward the basket created fouls and allowed Fallon to ice the game from the free throw line.

“It’s huge, especially with the game going back and forth,” Fallon coach Corey Williams said about composure.

Garrett Adams led the Greenwave with 16 points, and Tisdale and Smith each had 11. Dexter Daum scored 10 points and Jake Johnson had seven.

Transition baskets helped Fallon keep its lead with Tisdale lacing a layup from a Smith feed. A technical foul on Damonte Ranch’s bench with 3:16 left triggered Fallon.

“It certainly doesn’t hurt us,” Williams said. “It gave us the ball back and two free throws. We’ll take it.”

Free throws from Smith and Garrett Adams sealed the win.

The first half saw two different Fallon teams, but Williams pointed out the starters ran out of energy after the first quarter. Williams, though, was surprised how fired up Fallon came back in the second half.

“I think we got gassed early,” he said. “It looked like we lost some wind early. I should have subbed earlier.

“We had a spark of energy somewhere. We got a just got a burst.”

Fallon’s defense held Damonte Ranch to single digits in the first and third quarters, which allowed the Greenwave to take its first lead and then battle from behind in the second half.

Smith’s 3-pointer gave Fallon a 3-0 lead. Tisdale sank two free throws and a layup for a 9-5 advantage. After the Mustangs took the lead at halftime, 22-20, the Greenwave counted on Tisdale, Smith and Johnston to retake the lead, 30-26, with three minutes left in the third.

Josh Anyrick led the Mustangs with 15 points and Jack Denzler added 10. Luisi Terrana scored seven points.

Fallon, winners of four in a row, play next in a nonleague home game against North Valleys on Dec. 30 at 5 p.m., an then in the Capitol Classic in Carson City from Jan. 1-3. The next league game is on Jan. 6 at Galena.

Williams said he wants to see his bench strength improve.

“I want to see us develop some depth,” he said. “It’s nice to start developing a winning tradition.”
