Members of the Fallon city council, Mayor Ken Tedford Jr. and police chief Kevin Gehman arrived at Oats Park by Wells Fargo stagecoach to kick off Fallons Centennial Thursday evening. Councilman Willis Swan, right, watches as Councilman John Tewell exits the stage. Councilman Bob Erickson waits his turn inside. More photos will appear in Sundays LVN-FES.
The incorporation of Fallon was not an easy one, said Mayor Ken Tedford as he addressed hundreds people on Thursday at Oats Park for the Fallon Centennial celebration.
Tedford, wearing a tan overcoat and top hat, outlined the struggle for Fallons incorporation since many county residents opposed the idea back then.
Tedford said the thought of Fallon incorporating originated in 1905 as several small businesses and homes settled into the area. The mayor said the city in a sense was born in the Nevada Supreme Court.
In 1907, Sen. Robert Douglass wrote a law establishing procedures for establishing governments of cities in Nevada, allowing the majority of taxpayers to apply in writing to district court for incorporation status.
After the law was passed, opponents to the incorporation challenged the law, saying it was unconstitutional. The Supreme Court disagreed, and on Dec. 18, 1908, the citys first elections were held for mayor and city council.
And tonight we celebrate that momentous occasion that set the course for Fallon to prosper as a city and grow to what we are today, with a vision for the future that is unbridled in potential, Tedford said.
In his speech, the mayor said the city persevered through some tough times. But with resolve, creativity and determination Fallon met those challenges and added what the next 100 years brings is unknown.
The future of Fallon is as bright as that bonfire crackling with energy (and) lighting the way, he said. Let us go with confidence and resolve into our future and make it great.
CC Communication provided four sheet cakes to commemorate the occasion.
Centennial Co-chairwoman Michon Mackedon said the city feels great pride in having such a landmark day. She added the city had its struggles but solved them.
We worked all year to make this special, she said of the 25 Centennial Commission members. We have been working 15 months to make this extra special.
Mackedon said the event went smoothly, and to battle the weather, residents gathered around the bonfire and heaters. Others went inside the Barkley Theater.
Co-chairwoman Valerie Serpa called the event an important celebration.
I think the city had enough foresight to celebrate its past, she said, mentioning the Centennial Stage as one example. The stage was built for the Fallons 100th birthday.
Its a nice place to celebrate our past and celebrate our future, Serpa said.
Local talent performed on the stage at the event, and there were tents for residents wanting to escape the cold weather.
