Carrier Air Wing Seven came from NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia to the Fallon Naval Air Station to shovel sand and paint buildings last week.
Not exactly, but thats how dedicated the air wing is to helping out communities wherever they go.
Our Commanding Officer Captain Craig has for a long time wanted to keep the culture of the service going, so weve been working with Habitat for Humanity for a long time and when we got out here we didnt have one of those scheduled, said Lt. Randal Potter, the Chaplain of Carrier Air Wing Seven. We found out your Public Works people had some work that needed to be done, so we got with the Public Works Office and decided to come out and move the sand in the playground today and paint the buildings.
Air Wing Seven teamed up with NAS Fallons Construction Battalion Mobile Unit-303 to replace the playground sand in Sorensens Park and to paint some buildings at the Child Development Center.
Carrier Air Wing Seven actually tries to do community relations projects anywhere we go, whether its on deployment or any type of detachment, so its just business as usual for CAG 7, said Information System Technician First Class (SW) Tavaris Peterkin, the Strike Fighter Squadron Eight Three Rampagers Operations Department Leading Petty Officer.
Chaplain Potter said he had 43 volunteers signed up to do the volunteer work, but a few more showed up, so he had over 50 sailors volunteering their time to help with the work.
One of the reasons that we are so service-oriented when it comes to community relations is because my commanding officer uses a term he calls incentivizing, said Potter. His goal there is he doesnt make us do these on Saturdays when everybodys off. He allows us to do them during the work week and of course we still support what our command is doing and our work load, but we always have some sailors that we can break away that can do a comrel project.
This is my first time doing a community relations project, said Personnelman Second Class (SW) Christina Reaves, a pay and personnel clerk with Helicopter Squadron Five. I think its a great opportunity to get out there and help each other out and do whatever we can, whenever we can.
Carrier Air Wing Seven arrived at NAS Fallon on Oct. 25 and is scheduled to complete its training on Friday.
