Pack men open at Montana State

One of the big reasons for the Nevada basketball team’s success under coach Mark Fox the past four seasons has been its ability to win on the road.

Since the 2004-05 season, the Wolf Pack has posted a 38-16 record away from the friendly confines of Lawlor Events Center, including wins in 21 wins of their last 31 games.

For the second consecutive season, Nevada opens the season with two games on the road, including tonight’s opener at Montana State at Worthington Arena.

ESPN Radio 630 AM will broadcast the game at 6:05 p.m.

Nevada follows tonight’s game up with a road game at the University of San Diego, an NCAA team a year ago.

“You have to be able to win on the road if you are going to compete for the championship,” Fox said. “Four of our first six are on the road, which isn’t exactly ideal with a young team.

“We put this schedule together with the idea to get us in the postseason. We thought JaVale McGee was going to be with us, but he’s not and we have to deal with that.”

The 7-foot McGee left after his sophomore season and is now with the Washington Wizards.

Two things that Fox has always preached about playing on the road is defense and rebounding, especially at the offensive end.

“If you can’t get stops, teams (at home especially) can get hot and then you don’t have a chance,” Fox said.

It’s too early to judge how well Nevada is playing defense right now. Fox said he saw some good things and bad things in the 89-67 exhibition win over San Francisco State on Saturday.

In Montana State, Nevada faces a team with six players —forward Erik Rush (19 points per game), forward Branden Johnson (12.5 ppg), 6-foot-9 240-pound center Davaldo Mbunga (13.0), guard Will Bynum (10.5), Bobby Howard (15) and Danny Piepoli (12.5) — averaging in double figures after two exhibition wins.

“The have a lot of new faces and a lot of starters back,” Fox said. “They shot the three very well their last game. (Mbunga) is a good rebounder and looks to score in the low block. He can finish. He’s an older guy, he’s experienced and has a lot of strength.”

Nevada will undoubtedly throw Richie Phillips, Luke Babbitt and Dario Hunt at the Bobcats’ center.

Fox said that it also was hard to gauge how well Nevada played offensively last week because of a decided height advantage and the fact that the Gators were not very good at the defensive end of the floor.

Nevada junior Joey Shaw, a junior college transfer, was impressive with 25 points and seven rebounds, while Malik Cooke had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Luke Babbitt scored 16 points last weekend and junior Ray Kraemer added 12.

Despite the absence of starter Brandon Fields, who was cited for petty larceny on Oct. 15 and is still suspended, Nevada will be a formidable foe for the Bobcats, according to Montana State coach Brad Huse.

“Nevada creates a lot of issues because it is a highly talented team at virtually every position,” Huse said. “We'll be facing a different type of athlete than we've faced this year. If there's a positive, it's that we're at home."
