Steve Christie
Special to the LVN
The movie Short Track was released on Sept. 30 for sale across the country. If you happen to watch the film, you will be able to spot a Fallon local, Steven Christie, playing the role of Cotton. This is Christies first appearance in a full-length film. Christie is currently attending classes at California State University, Northridge, but this summer he returned Fallon, working on his familys farm and singing and playing music around town at the Overland, the Big Horn and Jive n Java.
Short Track, a small yet ambitious stockcar racing movie rated PG, should appeal to race fans of all ages. Shot primarily in the Carolinas and in Georgia, Short Track stars veteran actors Pepper Sweeney (Greys Anatomy), Barbara Niven (HBOs The Rat Pack and Redline), Joshua Snyder (Shopgirl), Ann Bratton and Patrick Gorman (Gettysburg and Gods and Generals).
Written and directed by Marie Hopkins, a native Carolinian from a longtime NASCAR-associated racing family, the film centers on the family life of Short Track veteran race driver Blake Beckett. Steven plays Cotton, a grease monkey who works for Beckett Racing. While only a small role, Steven brings a hefty dose of humor to each of his scenes.
Writer-director, Marie Hopkins had this to say:
Steven Christie was one of the very first actors cast for Short Track. His agent suggested that we have him in to audition. Steven had this amazing confidence and genuine charisma. He was such a gentleman and so personable, it was only seconds before I knew he was exactly what we were looking for in the important role of Cotton. I was really blown away with his talent to transform himself into this character.
It was amazing to me how he picked up the North Carolina accent and feel. He just nailed the audition. We offered him the part immediately. We had auditioned about 200 young men for this role. No one else had a shot after we saw him; he was that good.
Working with Steven was great. He was only 17 years old at the time, but he endeared himself to the cast and crew and fit in with a bunch of really seasoned professionals wonderfully. Steven is extremely talented and Id bet my last dollar that this young man has a bright future ahead in the business. So look to see more of him in Short Track 2.
Copies of Short Track are available online at Target, Best Buy and Circuit City.
