Churchill County hosted two fight cards Friday night, but the second one resulted in the arrest of several aspiring brawlers.
Two Carson City residents were arrested after getting into a fight at the conclusion of the Night of Fights boxing matches at the Cantaloupe Festival Friday night.
Churchill County Sheriff Richard Ingram said there were several skirmishes during the festival that police were able to squelch with little difficulty except for the last incident.
He said the last boxing match concluded at about 10:30 p.m. when a fight started between two women.
Ingram said Twyla Murphy, 30, pulled the hair of a woman from Gardnerville before knocking her to the ground. When deputies tried to break up the fight, Darwin Hicks, 31, who lives with Murphy, punched the Gardnerville woman and a man attempting to stop the altercation.
As CCSO deputies attempted to arrest Murphy and Hicks, the two exited the fairgrounds but not before Murphy allegedly elbowed and pushed an officer.
As deputies tried to stop the two in the parking lot, a group of 18 to 20 friends and relatives of Murphy and Hicks tried to shield the two from view.
Ingram said Hicks clenched his fists and yelled colorful obscenities at officers, while Murphy resisted by pushing deputies.
When more deputies arrived, Murphy and Hicks still resisted being arrested and had to be tasered to get them to comply.
The sheriff said a few people from the group tried to intervene to help their friends and had to be restrained. They also screamed obscenities at police.
Murphy was arrested for misdemeanor battery, two counts of battery on a peace officer and physically resisting/obstructing/delaying. Hicks was arrested for two counts of misdemeanor battery and physically resisting/obstructing/delaying.
Another man, Anthony Hernandez, 44, of Schurz, who allegedly tried to incite the situation, was arrested for three outstanding contempt warrants.
Ingram said there were more confrontations at the event than CCSO experienced in the past. However, he added, the vast majority attending the festival were acting responsibly.
"Those folks who put in their time and effort to put this event on are to be commended," he said.
However, he said, there was "a certain component with a thug mentality" who decided to cause a major disruption.
"It's unfortunate there are a few who break the law and commit violence," he said.
Hicks bail amount was set at $3,146, and the bail amount for Murphy was not available at press time.
