The lights came on at Fallon's Top Gun Raceway for two nights of action on Friday and Saturday.

Friday night's action featured Test and Tune and Grudge Racing. Friends, neighbors, and whomever else came out to race each other on the Top Gun track, using their regular every day street vehicles. 40 racers participated, including some first-time racers, according to track director John Stauverman.

"We are always glad to have new racers," Stauverman said. "It was heads up racing with a lot of competition."

Friday also featured a jackpot race. All participants put some money in a pot, and the winner took it all. Lonnie Grace of Frank's Automotive won the $90 purse.

Saturday's action featured the 10th race of the Summit ET points series, along with Pro Quick 16 and Motorcycle Mayhem. The action got underway at 7 p.m., 45 minutes before the sun went down. Racers started racing with the waning daylight at their backs and continued as a bright red-orange sunset gave way to night time and the illumination of artificial lights.

Nintey drivers participated in Saturday's racing, according to Stauverman.

"We had a real good bracket race on Saturday," Stauverman said. "We had really good time. The weather was phenomenal."

In the Pro Category, Jay Neeley finished first in his 1970 Dodge with a time of 11.150 seconds and speed of 121.15 miles per hour. Tom Brown finished second in his '55 Austin-Healy at 11.149, and 111.23. Jimmy Johnson in a '68 Nova and Brian Costello in a '69 Chevelle tied for third.

The Super Pro winner was Rocky McKellip with a time of 11.257 seconds and speed of 114.14 MPH. Lora Enget came in second in her '66 Chevelle in 10.714 and 124.75. Tying for third were Les Ogden in Roadster and Cassandra Barrett in a '73 Nova.

Tops in the Sportsman race was David Gonzoles in his '78 Olds, running the quarter mile distance in 12.247 second at a top speed of 108.45 MPH. Zach Clark took second in his '70 Chevy in 14.068 and 95.37. Steve Gardner finished third in his Pontiac.

Alaina Roseland took the High School race, winning in her white Oldsmobile Alero in 18.181 seconds at 73.35 MPH, ahead of runner-up Gene Bruflat in his Ford at 20.411 and 68.44. Lacie Roumpz finished third in her Plymouth.

The Junior Dragsters saw Gabrielle Silva complete the 1/8-mile distance in 8.024 seconds at 81.38 MPH. The runner-up was Grace Rowan at 10.585 and 60.15. Shawn Chase finished third.

Only eight Summit ET Points Races have been run this season because races five and six were rained out over the weekend of May 24-25. They will be made up on Sept. 13.

Barrett tops the Super Pros with 446 points with McKellip second at 436 and Grace third at 413. Eric Doukas leads the Pros at 512, followed by Tom Brown at 479 and Tommy John at 468. The Sportsman leader is Robert Thomas at 452, Marc Klose is second at 441 and Phil Metz is third at 410.

Among the youngsters, Roseland dominates the High School category with 396 points, well ahead of second place Gene Bruflat at 264 and Justin Clark at 110. Young ladies also top the Junior Dragsters. Annecia Schultz leads at 423, followed closely by Cortney Morris at 412. Grace Rowan is third at 350.

Top Gun now gears up for three big days of racing over Labor Day weekend, Aug. 29-31. It's the Big Bucks 2008 races, along with Test and Tune on Friday and Super Comps Points Races on Saturday and Sunday. Gates open on Friday at 2 p.m. with racing at 5 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, gates open at 7:30 a.m. and racing begins at 9 a.m.

"We'll have racers from all over Northern Nevada, California and other states competing for a $25,000 purse," Stauverman said. "We're looking for a big event on that."
