Hats off to the Navy folks

It is always a wonderful thing to get the mail and find an unexpected check for over $600! The Combined Federal Credit Union (CFC) listed CAPS as a receiver of donations from Navy personnel and, boy, did they really step up! We can’t thank you enough!

Saturday at the Oasis Stampede was a huge hit for us! We had lots of people with their dogs show up early so that they could be sure to get in on the contests. We had prizes for first, second and third places, for each contest. Here is a list of the winners:

Cutest Dog: First, Garrett Kalt and Bailey; second, Donna Whiteman and Buba; third, Barbara Smith and Molly

Biggest Dog: First, Alan Huckins and Bear; second, Laura Nelson and Paris; third, Jessi Eckert and Gunner

Smallest Dog: First, Donna Whiteman and Buba; second, Jean McClain and Bandi; third, Wilma Hybarger and Bubbles

Ugliest Dog: First, Mandy Nolen-Smith and Fergie; second, LeAnn Maurice and Shorty; third, Kelly Vest and Tybo

Best Kiss: First, Diana Blevins and Dalton; second, Rachelle Muir and Dutchess; third, Irene Blodgett and Pardner

Best Bark: First, Kerry Vest and Tybo; second, Lani Martin and Trix; third, Sharon Caffero and Beethoven

Best Trick: First, Wilma Hybarger and Chili; second, Kerry Vest and Tybo; third, Rachelle Muir and Dutchess

Musical Sit: First, Garrett Kalt and Bailey; second, Wilma Hybarger and Chili; third, Cody and Rambo

Check out our Web site at www.capsnv.org for a recap and lots of great pictures from the eventful day. We can’t wait to participate again. Thanks go to the organizers of the event for such a well-planned weekend. We were provided a sound system and a very nice tent to work under. We also sold our t-shirts and our new totes, and many people pre-ordered our 2009 Happy Endings calendar.

Please, please, please, if you have not yet had your cat spayed or neutered, do so now. I reported last week that we received a call from someone who needed help placing 20 cats and kittens. Not long after that phone call, we got another one from someone who needed help placing 26 cats and kittens. We have several programs to take advantage of if you qualify (we have income requirements), but if you can afford it, please do it. Just spaying or neutering one cat makes such a difference. There is no reason to have one animal, dog, cat, horse or whatever species it is, without a home.

Don’t forget about the raffle that Flower Tree is holding to benefit CAPS. The drawing is on Monday, Sept. 1. Get your tickets when you visit Flower Tree; tickets are also available at the shelter (open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.). They are $1 each or five for $6. The prize is a 15-gallon flowering plum shade tree. It would look great in anyone’s yard, with those beautiful plum-colored leaves and the soft-pink flowers when it blooms. They grow fast and are easy keepers.

Jennifer Williamson, a Churchill County resident, is president of CAPS.
