FARMINGTON, N.M. - With the National High School Finals Rodeo heading into its final weekend, Fallon's Marisa Julian is still in the running for the all-around cowgirl title.
Through Thursday evening's performance, Julian was in seventh place, having dropped a notch since being in sixth place the previous evening. Julian has 320 points, well behind leaders Hollie Kucera of Atherton, Calif., and Macy Fuller of Clarkston, Wash., who were tied for the lead at 470.
Bailey Corkill, who was in seventh place after Wednesday night's performance, dropped out of the top 10 on Thursday.
Following Thursday night's action, Julian stood in 24th place in the pole bending competition with an average time of 42.015 seconds. In an event where places in the standings are determined by tenths or even hundredths of a second, Julian was less than two seconds behind leader Jessie Suazo of Bayfield, Colo., at 39.988. Julian was also 11th in girls cutting with 420 points, just 13 behind leader Jamie Lancaster of Jerome, Idaho, at 433.
Corkill, meanwhile, is doing well in breakaway roping. Through Thursday night she was in fourth place with an average time of 7.199. The leader was Cassidy Boggs of Cyril, Okla., at 6.316.
It was a different story in girls cutting, where Corkill stood in 96th place with 195 points and in goat tying, where she was in 86th place with a time of 10.237 seconds. She and teammate Dakota Eldridge of Elko ranked 61st in team roping with an average time of 13.634.
Another Fallon cowgirl, Mandi Taylor, is in 33rd place in barrel racing with an average time of 18.005.
She's 131st in pole bending. Morgan Howard is 90th in goat tying at 10.445.
Fallon cowboy Devin Norcutt stood in 13th place in the saddle bronc competition with an average score of 65. He finished in third place in Thursday's performance, also with a score of 65. Terynn Archuletta stood 38th in steer wrestling with an average time of 33.933.
Utah continued its dominance of the team standings with 5,868 points. Texas stood second with 4,633, followed by Nebraska at 3,053, California at 2,847, Louisiana at 2,820, Wyoming at 2,645, Kansas at 2,566 and New Mexico at 2,355. Nevada was ninth at 2,198 and Oklahoma rounded out the top 10 at 2,028.
Cameron Hopper-Craig of Battle Mountain continued to battle for the all-around cowboy title as he stood in second place with 655 points. Proving that there is rodeo in the Sunshine State, Caleb Sanderson of Kissimmee, Fla., was the leader at 675.
Other Nevadans ranked in the top 30 based on average and scores of their events.
Cody Robinson of Las Vegas is fifth in tie-down roping with an average time of 22.022. Austin Carrasco of Wellington is 15th at 24.129 while Elko's Eldridge is 17th at 25.536.
Winnemucca's Trent Montero is 20th in bareback with an average score of 69, while Hopper-Craig is 36th in the same event at 61.
Oakley Baker and Vic Ugalde of Orovada are fifth in team roping with an average time of 17.745.
