Corkill, Julian making run at all-around cowgirl

FARMINGTON, N.M. - Two Fallon cowgirls are in the running for the highest honor at the National High School Finals Rodeo.

With the first go completed and the second just underway, Bailey Corkill and Marisa Julian find themselves in the top 10 of the all-around cowgirl competition. Through Wednesday night, Julian is in sixth place with a score of 300 and Corkill is tied for seventh at 260.

The leader is Hollie Kucera of Atherton, Calif. at 520.

Corkill, winner of the all-around cowgirl title in this year's Nevada State High School Rodeo, is 14th in breakaway roping with a score of 3.265 seconds. She's also 61st in goat tying and 77th in girls cutting. She and teammate Dakota Eldridge of Elko were 51st in team roping, but eighth in that event in the second go with a time of 13.364.

Julian finished Wednesday's competition ranked eighth overall in pole bending with an average time of 42.015. However, she was in fourth place in that event for the second go with a time of 20.344. She also was 30th overall in girls cutting with a score of 215.

Devin Norcutt is doing well in saddle bronc. The Fallon cowboy came into Thursday's competition ranked 11th overall and second in the second go, both with a score of 65.

Other Fallon competitors in the rodeo include Colt Capurro, 46th, boys cutting; Morgan Howard, 66th, goat tying; Mandi Taylor, 107th, pole bending; and Terynn Archuletta, 110th, steer wrestling.

In the team standings, Nevada ranks fifth overall with 2,500 points. Utah is well out in front with 4,350, Texas is second at 3,746, Wyoming third at 3,165 and Kansas fourth at 2,700. Rounding out the top 10 are California in sixth place at 2,373; New Mexico, seventh, 2,206; Louisiana, eighth, 2,140; Nebraska, ninth, 2,000; and South Dakota, 10th 1,951.

Other Nevada performers ranking in the top 30 of any event are Elyse Heberger of Washoe Valley, 20th, breakaway roping; Trent Montero, Winnemucca, 10th, bareback; Cameron Hopper-Craig, Battle Mountain, 11th in saddle bronc and 26th in bareback; Oakley Baker, Overton, 12th, tie-down roping; Hannah Vaughn, Yerington, 15th, girls cutting; and Shelby Scott, Hiko, 10th, goat tying. Baker and teammate Vic Ugalde of Orovada are 21st in team roping, and Cody Robinson of Las Vegas and Chase Williams of Pahrump are 23rd. Hopper-Craig is in second place in the all-around cowboy competition behind Ty Erickson of Montana.
